the K03 is made by Borg Warner, which is a different company to IHI.

You can't change the point at which they spool however what that means is the K04 can last longer up the rev range where the K03 starts to run out of breath.

The Mk6 GTI is an IHI turbo not a K03.  :smiley:

Im pretty sure the mk6 gti is a k03... but i stand to be corrected.

The k03 definately spools quicker than the k04.

the Mk6 is definitely an IHI turbo

and i believe Stattler said he had some dyno runs that demonstrated that the K04 doesn't spool any slower than a K03

Can't say I notice slower spooling on the ED30 K04 than on my previous K03 GTI  :happy2:

Power to weight ratio (from Hurdy's post on Golfgtiforum):-

MKIV R32 power to weight is around 163bhp/ton
MKV R32 power to weight is around 166bhp/ton  :smiley:
MKV GTI power to weight is around 151bhp/ton
MKV ED30 power to weight is around 173bhp/ton  :P

All based on std manufacturer quoted figures, we all know that ED30's tend to make more than that and maybe the R32 does too?.

Wonder if when this thread will get locked too?

That will make a huge difference to the car I would think and being able to adjust it when u want will be even better

Maybe but as my K03 was only stage 1 and K04 stage 2 but they felt similar, if anything K04 may be 100-150rpm later but not noticeable tbh, what is noticeable is that the K04 keeps pulling up to 6500 and somewhat upto 7000rpm, whereas the K03 seemed to run out of steam at 5500rpm

Are they all done by the same driver ? If not then the stats are pointless  :evilgrin:


....Exactly!

Put a professional racing driver (or advanced trainer) in a car versus a higher performance car driven by someone less expert and guess who will achieve the faster lap time.

That sounds about right Robin. There is no doubt that the k04 offers the larger gains overall but I have to be honest and say a remaped gti feels a little more 'sprightly' for everyday driving. Which is probably where my preference of the R32 comes in.... its much easier to get your speed up when you are looking for it, although that said I can confess that the R32 used to be driven much harder than the GTi has.

....Most definitely!!!!

When I test drove my GTI with a R32 back-to-back over a 40-mile lap with every kind of road in it, I found myself often in licence losing territory and also needed to find a petrol station much sooner than expected!

I've also driven a modified Mk4 R32 and a modified Mk5 R32 with Haldex Race setting and enjoyed both very much indeed. The V6 is a glorious sound and one which I can't get enough of. If the Mk5 .:R32 had come out earlier I would be in one now.... And of course it would be red!
