Smoke(oil) when pulling off - UPDATE 4 FIXED!!!
« on: August 29, 2012, 02:39:05 pm »
Hi all, need to pick some brains.

Last night i noticed when I was pulling off from lights, traffic etc that quite a lot of white/very light grey smoke was coming out the back, once I get going and even if i put my foot down it stops, not even much black smoke which is what i would expect from a diesel.  So it seems that if i'm sitting there idling for a few seconds it building up something.

No warning lights, not noticing any lumpyness or anything wrong with the engine.  Turbo is only about a year old but it is due a service.

Any ideas peeps?

pull any one of the intercooler hoses and check for oil...generally speaking white smoke is oil....

White smoke could be unburnt diesel as well. When glow plugs last been changed?

I don't know if they have, not since I have owned it which is almost 2 years.  Is it an easy job?

I have no idea what the inter cooler pipes look like or how to discontent them to check for oil.

Should I just get it booked in asap?

glow plugs usually only used when engine cold on pre-glow cycle to warm combustion chamber...after that they dont work...

could also be a clogged/oily intake manifold...

whats your mileage?

Possibly coolant leaking into EGR system through the EGR cooler, common problem.

I have also noticed that it doesn't happen when I first start the car, but after a couple of minutes.  Does this help any further?

I agree oil is blue smoke. White smoke is usually water.

If it is a coolant leak, how serious is it?

it isn't necessarily going to be anything serious, if it is only on pull away i would suggest it is a small drip/leak as it would pool while there is no load then not have enough to be noticed on routine driving

i wouldnt panic about it too much, chances are it will be something small and easy to fix

I had white smoke on start up or idle on my TDI Passat, changing glow plugs resolved problem. I even remember fitting first cheap aftermarket glow plugs, which did not help, after fitting genuine ones, smoke on start up and idle stopped.
