MK5 to Mk6 GTI
« on: August 30, 2012, 10:29:22 pm »
Hello all
Has anyone done this swap , is there much difference? Im thinking of upgrading to a newer car and quite fancy a Mk6 after having use of an Ed35 for a week! I was thinking about a White one , but seem to be drawn towards Carbon Grey as well.... PS are there any disadvantages to the cloth seats compared to leather? My Mk5 has leather but a lot of Mk6s seem to have cloth , I can only afford a 2009 car at the moment.

Cloth seats aren't so good if you have wee kids or wet dogs. Leather is easier to wipe spills off. Cloth feels nicer to sit on IMO.

I'm swapping my mk5 for a mk6 this weekend  personally I wanted cloth interior rather than leather, although from my experiences of looking, cars with leather seem to have better spec.

I wanted white aswell but they seem to be very popular with cars selling quickly and even commanding a premium, but after looking  at lots of pic's of redrobin's car and saint steve's recently detailed car I have decided red is the colour for me and I am over the moon with my choice.

The mk6 gets alot of criticism for not being much different to the mk5 and I can see where people are coming from with that point of view, but for me that isn't a problem  the mk6 seems like a natural progression after the mk5.

I will report back after saturday when I collect my car, good luck with your search.

Theres a nicely specced 2011 61 plate GTI in white for 16,799 which seems a bargain. 22k miles on the clock iirc.

EDIT: 5k miles

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201234482653686/sort/default/usedcars/transmission/manual/maximum-age/up_to_2_years_old/fuel-type/petrol/quantity-of-doors/3/seller-type/trade_adverts/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/model/golf/make/volkswagen/onesearchad/used/onesearchad/nearlynew/onesearchad/new/radius/1500/keywords/gti/postcode/bd181pd/page/1/advert-type/standard-listing?logcode=ucnnp

Does seem too cheap and from a dealer at this price means they are looking at a £1500 profit making their pruchase around £15000 . There is something they are not telling in the advert , this is a £20k car all day and why not at a VW main dealer , its not a year old yet !

Seems cheap, but looks nice  :happy2: RNS and Xenons too

I do really like the MK6. Had extensive use of one in the past at work. Tbh you cant really go wrong with a Golf.

In regards to R32UK reply you do get a bad apple every now and then, I had a new engine in my Edition 30 after just 4000 miles.

Just moved to a MKVI (albeit a Golf .:R) myself and previously had an Edition 30. TBH the interior will be quite recognisable and all the instruments similar to what you are used to in the MKV. The MKVI just upped it's game a little when it came to the quality and details in it. The engine in the MKVI is decent and if you are modding it you'll see a bigger jump in power with just a map than you'd see in a MKV GTI. Handling is pretty much the same in the GTI for both MK's although the XDS diff is very good in the MKVI GTI.
Golf R gone.

We've got an Edition 30 and a Mk6 GTI, as Hurdy says above VW definetly improved the fit and finish of the materials in the MK6 compared to the MK5.  Also ours has the adaptive suspension and i thought it would be gimmicky but it is great, there are 3 distinct setting.  Comfort is great for the Motorway on a long cruise.

Also the engine and IHI turbo on the MK6 seem to deliver the results, did 226 bhp on Surrey RR rollers and it's stock. :happy2:

How do you find the performance difference between the two as this is the move I'm hoping to make, my ed30 is stage 1 mapped and the mk6 will also be mapped in time but just wondering how the 2 feel back to back as stock cars

When driving them back to back as stock cars, i always felt the MK6 was more responsive, especially from low down the revs, i guess this is down to the smaller turbo spooling up earlier.  However the Ed30 delivered a deeper mid range surge, as the revs approached 3k.  Then above this the Ed30 was stronger to the redline.

However the ED30 is stage 1 now and MK6 still stock, but MK6 still feels quick when i drive it.
