Cooling fan problem
« on: August 31, 2012, 02:11:18 pm »
Even after switch off, the fan on my car just keeps on going on off on off etc. The only way to stop it, is to unplug it, or wait till the engine cools down fully. It has turnt my engine management light on, and when plugged in to the diagnostics machine, it shows cooling fan 1 is faulty. Any help on this?

Perhaps an obvious question but are you sure both fans are actually working??

Only the big fan at the front goes on and off continuously...

Well IF your smaller fan isn't working, your larger fan will be working overtime to compensate, happened to me recently...

Best thing to do is to take it to a VW specialist garage? So that I don't replace both fans when it is only one which doesn't work?

well i would assume it's your smaller one that doesn't work. Switch your air-con on, pop the bonnet open, look down, if your bigger fan is the only one that's working, then yes, your smaller one is broken. It's not a huge problem if that's the case to be honest, i got mine fixed just for peace of mind, but it was only at that point i discovered that my radiator was leaking, so had that replaced as well...  :sad1:

Where is the smaller one positioned? Should I be able to see it moving by just looking down with the bonnet open?

It is at the front of the engine bay and yes you can see it easily from the top. When my ac wasn't working I could see the fan wasn't spinning.

Yeah I have had the temperature coolant sensor replaced today. Cleared that fault from diagnostics, but the engine management light came back on with just the PO480 Engine Cooling Fan 1 left to fix.
