Open fog grills
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:32:04 am »
Hey,

sorry if this has been asked before... Was looking through the 'members rides' section and noticed people have open fog grills on their cars. Anyone know firstly if there any any advantages/disadvantages with these? Are they meant for countries with hotter climates?

Secondly where can I get my hands on some?

They are just for astetics mostly. bt you are correct they are from cars in a diferent climate.

Make sure you get genuine ones. Alot of the ones on ebay dont fit propery. Best look in the for sale section or post in the wanted section  :happy2:

The OEM open grill were originally fro the early Mk5 GTI then they went to the closed units. Can still be got from VW, will dig out the part numbers from ETKA later for you. You can get the cheap open ones with no rear sections from eBay for around £20 (not OEM) and quality may be less or (are you sitting down) you can get them from the dealers, about £90 I think but will check later. Can also be bought on here from time to time for around £40-£50 but are as rare as rocking horse do do.

Here are my OEM open grills with rear sections, so you know what your looking for.

They were made for hotter climates eg South Africa but found to make no difference. In fact apparently it can affect aerodynamics detrimentally though I have no idea by how much.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

^^^^ good point about aerodynamics.

The only other thing i would add is that i would not be happy running the completely open grills as water will get in by the bucket load, not to mention stones flying up from the road.

trawling through ETKA, cant find them  :fighting:

Think the part numbers for the open grills are...

Left       1K0 854 661 M 9B9
Right     1K0 854 662 F 9B9

The proper ones have a back to them. One side is just completely blocked. The other side has a duct which would direct air to the DSG box.

^^^^ yeap, as per the pic's posted.

Without taking then off the car i don't know the part numbers for the rear sections of the open fog grills though. Am sure the main dealer will be able to advice as those parts should be linked to the part numbers posted.

Most people don't know about. There is much missleading information on all the forums.

The truth is:

VW developed the open fog grills for the very vew "hot countries" GTIs which come with
a 2nd water radiator on the passenger side (driver side on LHD of course). If you don't
retrofit this cooler there's no sense in these open grilles. Some A3 TFSI, A3 3.2, S3, R32
and Mk.VI R DSG also come with that 2nd radiator (and open fog grille).

Keep in mind only one side is open (where the 2nd radiator sits). The other side is just
fake to give a symmetric appearence.

Where? At the stealer of course.
