High mileage GTI - OK??
« on: September 03, 2012, 08:47:33 am »
Hello

On my hunt for a mk5 GTI (ideally 2006-2007) I'm finding a lot of high mileage cars (70-90k on the clock). Anything I need to be wary of?
Would only buy with full FSH, belts and pumps at the right intervals etc of course. Just wondering what else I should check or if this kind of mileage is OK, especially as I do ~15-20k a year (especially if I decide to do more than one trip to Poland a year!)

Thanks!

I bought an ex-lease 2006 at 110k last April and it's still very strong at 127k now. As long as the service history checks out and it hasn't spent it's life being ragged around on short journeys you should be fine. The best thing you can do is get any potential car RAC inspected when bargaining or take a seriously clued-up friend then you'll walk away from the lemons.

Well, I've had mine from new in 2005 and just done 103k miles, so you can guess that my answer to your question is YES! It is OK - Full service history and learning how she has been cared for is key. Very good idea, as swedishfireball says, to get any used car checked out professionally before buying unless you already know the owner.

.
I think the term "high mileage" is born out of the very common practice of only keeping a car for 3 years and consequently so many secondhand cars on the forecourt having a typical 3 year mileage and then any higher mileage is considered as "high mileage". All a load of bollox IMO. Mind you, not all cars are built like German cars.

I must admit that as I approached my 100k mileage I did feel a bit that, not just me, but my car was also becoming an OAP, particularly as the two coincided. Now I think bring on the next 100,000!! She's going better than ever, but that might be helped by a few mods.

I do agree with you and RedRobin, and this is certainly very much a UK thing in my opinion. In Poland I have friends and family running cars well over 250,000km on the clock, but here when you see a car with over 60,000 the generally consensus would be "high mileage", and I guess I even fell guilty of that :-)

Thanks all for your help.

Now I have to decide...manual or DSG o_O

VW engines are good strong units and mileage is not an issue if serviced correctly  :happy2:

If you plan staying std get a manual and dont do much driving in traffic, if you plan to mod or do lots of traffic get DSG  :happy2:, try them both and decide which you like!
