Black rear badge
« on: September 03, 2012, 12:43:21 pm »
Dear all,

I have seen various posts re. the rear boot catch. I wondered what is the best way to get my badge black (glossy) Is it best to vynal wrap it? (MK5 GTI 2006) If so does anyone know if there are any places in Essex/London that would do this for me?

Thanks guys

Reece

Plastikote or Rustoleum black spray paint  I've painted a few and had great results
Make sure you use some 1000 or 800 grit and only paint in dry/warm conditions :happy2:

^^^^ as above, paint it!

If you want to wrap it, it's fairly easy to do yourself. Get a piece of Gloss Black Vinyl from somewhere like eBay, take the badge of the boot handle and wrap. Place over badge, heat up with a hair dryer, pull into place and cut excess off. Can be fiddle as a small area and backwards and forwards with heating, stretching buy no point getting anyone else to to it. Have wrapped and painted them in the past, one below is the wrapped rear one on my Eddy.

Hope that helps  :happy2:

Reckon it could be done by sanding the badge while it is on the car, then painting it black like that?

^^^^ yes. Might look like a black hole with no definition but if your going for all black, don't see why not. Much easier to remove the whole unit and prep (sand), plastic prime, paint and laquear when it's off the car. It's 99% prep. If it looks like a DIY job it will look s**te.

The other thing  to remember is when spaying (if spraying it), it goes everywhere, you will really need to mask off the whole back of the car or you will be able to literally feel particals of spray all over the rear end.

How easy is it to remove the badge? and will it just be the chrome part that comes off?

Here's mine, ebay £10

You will have to cut off the clips as they mount in different places, did mine with no fuss then just bonded it on. P.s i have taken it back off and it came off easily. At least doing it this way you will have your original to put back on if you ever decide to sell up, or as mentioned just wrap it.

If you have the 3D badge, simple. Open the boot release to 90 degrees and you should see a very small area In between the silver part and the black plastic part where a tool (I used a very strong flat bladed knife) can be inserted. Insert tool/knife and work around the edge from bottom to top on either side and bobs your uncle, the Silver VW emblem will pop off.

But if your referring to the whole unit, it's pretty simple, follow this from "Step 5"

Gazon,

Do you have the ebay link? I have read lots of threads that said the shop 'goingfast' sell ones that aren't compatible with the boot? Is this the one you bought?

Mine is an 06, so I am hoping its the two part badge, will save me a lot of time and effort...

Cheers

Gazon with this one, I have the 04 badge, can you just take off the badge, and stick this one onto it?

^^^^ IIRC, no!

You can Buy the whole unit from eBay or on here in the "For Sale" section, they pop up (no pun intended) all the time for around £40-£50.

Not trying to piss you off MC71, but what does the old badge look like with the badge taken off?
