Mk5 GTI stolen, what car to get next?
« on: September 04, 2012, 04:47:45 pm »
Hello All,

had my Mk5 GTI stolen from driveway back in july, scumbags broke into house through locked kitchen window and took the car with keys while my wife and I were at work. No mess or anything else stolen in house as keys were left out on stairs. I know it was careless but first time I've owned one of these, didn't realise how nickable they are! I've since installed extra window locks, security lights and home alarm system. Anyway really enjoyed the car for the 2 weeks I had it and now insurance has paid out I'm in the market for another car but not sure whether to get something less targeted. Anyone had similar dilemma and what decision did you make?

I don't know what the parking is like round your way but maybe you could  park the car in the street away from your house  a little next time you go away.

I do have a garage attached to my house but have never kept my car in it. I could clear it out. Have also bought a Disklok and considering gates on driveway. Have read about the Blackjax system but maybe the easier option would be a fast diesel instead.

fast diesel

:rolleye: Isn't that an oxymoron?

As for alternatives, if driving purity is high on the list I'd look at a BMW 130i m-sport, ditch the run-flats and fit an ATB diff. A friend has one as a daily drive, and although it's not going to set the world on fire in a straight line (and the looks are marmite), there's no doubting it is a good steer (with the rear if required).

Have been considering the BMW 1 series & civic type r as alternatives that drive/handle well. Test drove a seat Leon fr diesel but steering felt a bit light, lacking feedback after gti. Would these cars be less targeted than a golf gti by criminals?

All cars are targetted by opportunist thieves.

Although obviously hot hatches (and other fast cars) would to be higher up their list.
