Oil usage (again)
« on: September 04, 2012, 07:13:07 pm »
I know this has been covered endlessly, but I've had to top up with 1 & 1/2 litres in 4500 miles which seems ridiculous. My PCV is fine and there don't seem to be any oil leaks. Car now has 42.5k miles, I bought it with 38k on it.

I presume the valves haven't seated fully which is causing this, so I'm wondering if I should do a fill with running-in oil? Has anyone tried this? Or if I rag it/Italian tune up would that help?

Cheers for any advice.

my old mk5 gti had 100,000 plus on her and would not use a drop between sevices, every 12000 miles, but curent edition 30 with only 29000,on her wil use a little between services, think they get better later with more milage  :signLOL:

Oil usage isn't a bad thing (putting a few litres of clean oil in between services can only be a good thing for your engine)

The amount of oil an engine uses is generally dependant on how the engine was run in. On the new polo 1.4TSI's, the ones run in hard (high revs, load etc) use LESS oil than the ones run in gently

My car uses around about 1 litre every 2,000 miles (although I never let it run low) so I won't be worried about your consumption  :happy2:

Most VW engines use a bit of oil. You won't see it burning it (ie. Clouds of smoke) it will be very subtle

Apparently up to 1L every 800mi is considered within spec :scared:

My A3 2.0T used loads of oil when I first got it with 21,400mi on it. It's nearer to 62k now and hardly uses any and it's not really had a hard life in my ownership

Yep, i go from max to min in 1500 miles  :P :scared:. Apparently the problem is poorly designed rings, only way to stop it is fit the revised rings. Engine should be ok.

Also the car can lose oil through the rear pcv when on boost. Thats why you get oil in the boost hoses. There is nothing that can be done to stop that.

Yup, seems about right to me.  I thought my Type R had a thirst for oil until I got the GTI.  I had my car in at VW for a service last week and asked them to look at oil usage.  Mechanic said he looked it over and was fine.  He said figures of oil usage I was quoting were normal.

My 05 plate uses nothing between services which is strange considering the amount of people with early cars saying theirs drinks quite a bit

I read a post a few weeks ago where someone replaced his REAR PCV system and it stopped the oil consumption. May be worth a try

Think the later 07 onwards don't have a rear one.
