Okay I think you have all persuaded me to sell the mfd2 and fit the RNS myself, as long as I can find someone to do the coding for me. None showing up in the for sale section though and eBay looks pretty expensive. May have to sit tight for a while until one crops up.

Same situation. Have a MFD2 in the Golf at the moment which is great but doesn't really offer much compatibility with OEM bluetooth integration so decided to grab a RNS510 off ebay. Found a Revision B INCLUDING 5K0 bluetooth adapter including all wiring for £400. He also included his Media-In adapater with iPhone lead. Bargain!!

You need to code the gateway so that it knows a nav is installed.
Also if you have the oem soundpack amplifier you need to let the system know this so it'll monitor the speakers using the soundpack amplifier as well as reducing the output level to the amplifier.
Apparently the easiest way to check to see if the unit is correctly coded is to look for the fader option under tone. If it's not there then the system hasn't been coded for its inclusion.

Is the RCD300 worth much? Seems pretty erratic pricing on eBay, anyone looking for one?

RCD300 (non MP3 version) if in good condition and with the security code could see £30-£50. The MP3 version will see a little more but not much

I can get a revision H RNS510 for £460. Does that represent a good deal? And I shouldnt have any canbus problems?

My golf has factory fitted sat nav already, but I read somewhere that I may need an aerial adaptor. Can anyone confirm that please?

Sounds like a good deal if genuine and working correctly. Eddie-NL sells new H ones for £640 including postage

It depends on the revision of your canbus gateway but IMO you should just try it. As for an aerial adapter I would have thought that it wouldn't be needed seeing you already have an oem satnav.

have you had any luck with finding a good RNS 510?   seems like Eddie's have now gone (I only got my car today).   I know I need to check CAN BUS (friend has VAG-COM) and keeping fingers crossed as it's a 2007.   Eddie's offer was good as I'd be happier having someone know what they're doing install it.
