RNS510 potential upgrade
« on: September 04, 2012, 08:49:29 pm »
Hi All,

I am a frequent reader of this forum since I bought my 57 plate candy white golf gti in January of this year.

I currently have a factory fitted mfd2 and am thinking of upgrading to the RNS510. I am thinking of using OEMretrofits as they are local to me and will offer a part exchange for my mfd2 (only £100 but better than the hassle of having to sell it).

I have a few questions however:

Has anyone used these guys before and can they be recommended?
Will I need to update my can gateway? I have read that perhaps not with my car being late 2007.
Will the RNS be compatible with the factory fitted highline display (track names and nav info etc.)?
Which version RNS510 should I look to purchase?

Any thoughts / info much appreciated.

Hi

I'm not going to say don't use them, but look at all your options before

You would do better in selling the MFd2 in the for sale section on here where you probably will get double

How much are they quoting? and where are you?

Will the RNS be compatible with the factory fitted highline display (track names and nav info etc.)? YES
Which version RNS510 should I look to purchase? Latest is better

Any thoughts / info much appreciated.

I'm based in Leeds.  They are quoting £500 fitted for an LCD version of the RNS510 (that includes chopping in my old unit) but not sure which revision unit that will be.  Are there any that I should definitely avoid?

Thanks for all your help.

You could be getting anything from A - C then

They are currently are on H with J now starting to come through

If you still intend on using them you should enquire what you are getting as A versions are around the £300 mark where an Early C version is £420 mark.

don't forget that they will probably sell the MFd2 for £200 - £280

as posted earlier, your gateway will be fine

Another thing worth checking is if they say you are getting a C version, make sure it is not an A version that has been updated with firmware to a C

For a DIY mechanic swapping units should be simple enough.

All you'll require extra is correct coding for the unit that a vcds forum member close to you could do for free/little money. http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,120.0.html

I say do it yourself and get the best/latest version 510 that you can afford.

I'm in the same boat - due to pick up my ED30 this weekend, and wondering whether to upgrade MFD2 to RNS510.

I would HIGHLY reccommend the upgrade. As eddie said above, have a look at all your options and then decide what version unit you want and where you would like to get it from. Theres plenty of information on this website in regards to the rns 510, how to fit it, what addons you can have and much more

Just spoken to them again and managed to get them to offer £150 for my mfd2. So £450 for an RNS510 version B fitted. Good deal or not?

What exactly is the difference between the revisions? I understand the LED ones have the better screens, and at some point they got a better processor, but what are the main disadvantages with the older models?

Sorry for all the questions, just don't want to make the wrong move.

Bacillus, thanks for the video. Doing it myself doesn't really worry me (I've had the mfd2 out before to fit iPod and aux in) its just the additional hassle of selling the old unit and finding someone to code it.

On another note, can the radio code be retrieved by vcds or is this a main dealer only thing? I've found the code card in my service book but has nothing on it!

You will need to find the code before you remove it, if your local VW dealer is good they will give it to you or charge a small fee.

£450 for a B version and your old unit. If you are happy with it then it is up to you.
I wouldn't myself, but they are a business and need to make money.

Sorry but that deal is a rip off(OEMretrofits :fighting: ) has eddie said you can pick up C version LED screen for around £420-£450 if you sell the Mfd2 for around £150-£200 then your only putting down at max £250 to swap
