Broken engine, where would you go from here
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:58:11 am »
Mid June I lost oil pressure on the m25, I had the car recovered and I removed the sump and balance shaft to see what had happened, basically the chain that connects the crank to the balance shaft has snapped..
I have bought the chain however you need to remove the crank pulley and a part of the engine to replace it

I'd say I'm 65% mechanically minded, I know what I'm doing or there abouts

Obviously because the car ran for a while with no oil, I cannot guarantee that  the engine hasn't suffered permanent damage

I need to buy a locking tool in order to remove the crank pully

Would you:
Replace the chain, forever wonder why it snapped in the first place and hope all is well

Get a new engine, although it could be another ticking time bomb

This engine is just under 90k send it somewhere to get rebuilt with some better internals and chase hp?

All are expensive, potential option 1 could be time expensive too!

A friend of mine had a brnad new 10 plate S3 from the dealer and that snapped within 5k miles....so I think its just a bad luck thing.

Sorry this isnt much help!

Good luck with the fix mate

I'm not mechanically minded but if it were me, and assuming I had the funds, I would get the engine rebuilt but stronger and uprated. At least that wat you get something faster for your money.

Price up what its gonna cost for a rebuild & go from there. I'd personally get an edition 30 engine with KO4

I would ring Statlers in Sheffield to see if he's got any used low mileage engines available. It would probably work out cheaper than trying to repair your present engine.

Has anybody ever done an R32 engine swap into a mk5 GTI? Mk2 v6 engine swaps are common in PVW mag, I haven't seen a mk5.

It would be daft but brilliant. You would need a degree in man maths to justify the cost.

Not something anyone would probably even consider, the engine is thirstier, heavier and less powerful than a mapped GTI engine. The price would be daft to do it too.
Golf R gone.

why build what you can buy, the R lump would prob cost 2k and then you would need to recode loads to get it to work, then you would have de valved the car so much it wouldnt be worth a wank

its a good idea in theory (r32) but it wouldnt work, I almost bought an r32 instead of the GTI however i chose againsts it for higher running costs and the performance is almost the same! the only usp would be the 4wd system which would be lost on the GTI so in the end it just ends up as a heavier thirstier GTI..

god i miss this car, i bought a MGF as a run about for cheap no frills wind in hair sun on face summer loving! actually a pretty decent car! and the head gasket has only blown up 700 times.. i miss the build quality of the GTI
