Guess the BHP
« on: September 10, 2012, 10:49:44 am »
Hi Guys,

I have been a moderator and active member of the AX Owners Club for 15 years, and have had 6 AX's which include 2 VTS'd ones. These featherweight cars are so much fun, with saxo vts engines, brakes, suspension bolted on... My track car had the 406 coupe v6 brembo four pots and would out brake caterhams at Brands...

My good friend Martin is co-owner of Tweeq'd Automotive in Bordon, and apart from his own VTR Turbo Ax, currently being rebuilt with a fully forged VTS turbo engine, he has just completed this one which is also a friends and customer of his, it was fully mapped on saturday... Forged 1.6 Turbo VTS.

What ya reckon it made...?

some use coastdown and sometimes a percentage transmission loss. the percentage loss types (usually older) are the worst, the dyno measures BHP (torque x speed) at the wheels and adds a pre determined transmission loss, say 20% for a front wheel drive car.

Not so bad, but here's the problem:

A car has 100BHP at wheels as standard (add the loss and you have 120bhp at flywheel as standard), the engine is removed and turbo charged and makes 300bhp at the wheels. Its bolted to the same transmission as before so a 20% power loss. It now has 360bhp at the flywheel.

So a transmission that lost 20bhp now loses 60bhp.

I'm not sure that's the point, and I think you know it

Must be nearly 600bhp/tonne?

Probably 450bhp/tonne depending how reliable bhp is...

....Indeed. That was my point - I don't see the point of upping the power to that extent unless it's also enjoyable to drive.  :happy2:

I imagine they are just having a bit of fun and not taking themselves too seriously. It's probably an investment of time rather than money.
