Any owners/experience of a high miles mk v tdi?
« on: September 08, 2012, 09:27:37 am »
I am planning to buy a Mk V Gt 140 version.
I've seen one I could get for 3k possibly, and needs some minor paintwork.
Clutch and DMF,cam belt kit inc water pump have been changed.
It has 143k miles, selling on in the future could be difficult.
I run a mk v gti, and this is becoming costly to commute in, v power is not cheap.
With a tight budget, and getting a vag diesel is a minefield.
Drove nearly two hours last night for a car that had been keyed down two panels, but no mention on phone or advert :(
My Missus does not drive, and i like my gti in one piece.
I'm spending 300 per month on v power, so should pay for its self in the end.

Any concerns at this miles, head gasket, cam?
Read a lot of 2003/4 a3 tdis with head problems.

Any advice appreciated

Mines a 140 and currently at 114000. Only issue so far is the turbo making a siren / owl noise.
Apart from that it's fine.

Hmm, so turbos are prone? They most boost pretty low?
It's fsh, regularly serviced.

Mk5 gt-tdi with 121,000 and it still feels the same to drive and touch all the little ancilliarys.
Go for it. And I've had the car for 4,1/2 years and it's still sweet, also getting about 62.3 mpg on a run

Turbo's are prone to going and mileage doesn't seem to be a major factor as both a neighbour and another friend of mine have both had them go with well below 100k on the clock.

Cost wise, budget for £1000 to £1500 if it blows.

I've heard the turbos are prone to go on the 2.0 this too...

That's why I leaned toward the 1.9 when I was looking (along with lower insurance group) , bought I at 124k, on it's original turbo and dmf, I changed the dmf and clutch at 152k - dmf was perfect when it was taken out, clutch was worn.

Turbo on mine was also perfect, it came with a full service history - that's an important thing to look out for.- if your friendly with a garage it's very easy to check for shaft play and oil leak after getting it up on a ramp.

The camshaft issue was mainly with the early 1.9PD engines and some dealers using the wrong oil on long life servicing, mainly confined to the BRM engine I think ( check over at tdiclub.com)

Good luck!

I also run a Seat Altea PD140.  So far at 113k the engine, clutch and turbo are still going strong, even on a stage 2 Revo file with decat and egr delete.  Gets driven hard and I do expect the turbo to die soonish as the siren noise is getting worse.  Will just get the current turbo turned into a hybrid.

Used to loose coolant until I removed the egr cooler.

Each car is different so make sure you give it a good boot from low revs in 3rd to feel how the turbo is on test drives.

Usual stuff like worn dogbone mounts, wishbone bushes and cv boots will more than likely need changing.

Talking about high mileage. My Golf is in for some work under warranty and the only loan car the garage had was a 2002 (thought it was a 2005) Mondeo they had just received as a trade in. Interior could do with a deep clean but it was the mileage that caught my eye. For a 10 year old car with 182k on the clock it drives suprisingly well!!
