RNS510 - What Firmware will not cause battery drain

Hi Gents,

Tried to swap the Gateway this afternoon on my 2005 golf, long story short i can't get the damn thing out. In fact that should read, can't get enough pressure on the connecter to release it.

What RNS510 firmware is safe to use on a Rev E gateway without causing battery drain and how can i find which version my head unit is running using VCDS.

Undo the 2x Torx screws of the drivers footwell trim and lower it down.
The Cubby bin under the light switch, nip the sides in and pull it towards the drivers seat. You will see a Torx screw that holds the lower duct pipes in place, remove the screw and pull the ducting out.
The gateway will be up and look for the RED Plug
Unplug it
Prise the Plastic holder away from the metal frame with a slotted screwdriver
and remove it with the gateway in place.
Change the gateway over and reset the plastic rivet which held the holder in place.
And refit it

I am using 4020 modified firmware with v8 maps. If you local i can borrow discs.

THe last two i have done have been behind the cubby hole but on this occasion the damn thing is right up under the dash to the far left above the accelerator pedal. So after 5 hours, too many cuts to my hands to count i called it a day at 6.30pm. The problem is i can't get enough force on the red tab to disconnect the plug because of it's position, a friend (how has Beadle size hands) is going to have a go next weekend but as an interim solution i want to use the existing Gateway but only if its not going to cause battery drain.

My Gateway is Rv E and according to the sticker on the RNS510 the firmware is 0900 but i want to check this using VCDS but don't know how to.

When removing the canbus gateway, I leave the plug attached> remove the gateway off the cradle by squeezing the tabs on each side and pushing it upwards. Once freed, turn it 90 degrees anti-clockwise and then you should be able to wiggle it down below its cradle . You can then disconnect the plug and change the gateway as you get better access to the locking tab on the plug.

I had to remove the wiper motor, and go in via the drivers side access panel underneath where its mounted to get my can gateway out

I had to remove the wiper motor, and go in via the drivers side access panel underneath where its mounted to get my can gateway out 

From 2006+ the Gateway was conveniently hidden away behind the cubby hole accessible from under the scuttle panel and by removing the cubby hole and moving the relay panel however from 2004-2006 the Gateway is inaccessibly stashed away above the accelerator pedal.

Found the cable tie after 45 minutes of trying to remove the Gateway. I was not happy!

My hands and properly cut and bruised so it's going to be a couple of days before i can attempt it again

I can get hold of the gateway and even manoeuvre it away from the tray it sits on just can't get enough pressure on the connector to undo it.

takes me about 20 mins to do the whole job

The Gateway sits on a plastic tray with a single rivet to a vertical metal beam and on the other end of the widest point it clips onto another metal point.

prise it away from the vertical beam with a large slotted screwdriver, unclip it from the other side and get it out.

then swop them over and reset the sliding spindle in the plastic rivett, then refit.
