window switch removal from casing/door handles replaced
« on: September 15, 2012, 07:58:21 pm »
evening all!

Bought a set of new interior door handles, very cheap from VW...less than 12£ for drivers and 11£ for each passenger piece,, trouble is I can't seem to prise the window switches from the casings. I started with the drivers side as looked very easy from the guides I found but actually removing the buttons seem like it can't be done without trashing the old parts. what have people used to jimmy the tabs with. there's not much clearence to get any sort of tool in some places. Double confused

TIA

I used a steel rule. Anything which fits in the gap will do. A small screwdriver :happy2:

YAY! I done it!  :rolleye: I found a mini-mini screw driver set and you need to keep jimmying around the three tabs on each side side....and lots of patience. Release one side first and push something down the side to keep the tabs from popping back in. Theres more give than I thought in the plastic casing, so you can just about get a mini-screw driver in and start lifting the unit out working around until it pops out. As for the wing mirror control, it has two tabs at one end and one tab on the other. Use a mini-screw driver to attack the single tab end, push down along the tab and out and it will pop out. I thought it was in two pieces and ended up scratching the top. Both window switch and wing mirror switch can be removed from the underside so a few scratches wont be seen on the finished article.

Passenger door handle replaced
« Reply #3 on: September 16, 2012, 06:09:15 pm »
Replaced the passenger side 2 piece door handle today  :scared: Bit of a PITA. Had to get the door card off as there are three T20 torx screws you need to undo behind the door card before pulling the lower half section away. Then 2 T27 torx screws attaching the upper door handle to the door. Most guides I found to do this on the internet dont mention the three hidden screws  :fighting: Probably for later models. Was quite surprised how easy it is to get the door card off....gets me thinking I just might ugrade the front speakers in the near future  :nerd:
