help with some OSX stuff... apple geeks assemble!

Hi guys,

Just a quick one, i need some help with using multiple macs.

Ive got an iMac at work, which i do the bulk of my Miglior stuff on including managing photos and write ups etc. I bought a macbook air recently which i am using more and more at work and at home. Its lightning fast, the SSD drives are phenomenal.

Now, id like some help with sharing data between the two if possible. How would i go about being able to have a folder where i keep all my photos and docs on one hard drive somewhere (home or work) so i can edit directly to that folder and both imac and macbook? I have set up sharing between the two and can see docs etc from each machine, but im unsure if i can use this over the internet? I havent tried it yet.

Anyone following this, congrats to you! i barely know what im talking about so your doing well. Any advice on how to work between two machines and use the same data is greatly appreciated!

iCloud? Isn't that the easy way to share files on different devices? And then the files Autosave globally. I assume you are running either OSX Lion or Mountain Lion.

I use Macs but not iCloud so I don't know for certain.

It doesnt quite work like that Robin. iCloud is a free service so doesnt allow hosting of large quantities of data. Previously, with MobileMe, it was a paid subsription so you could fill your iDrive with loads of data.

Drop box works well on my macs. Should do what you need. Drag and drop, easy to use.

+1, also you can upgrade your account to 18GB for life online for about £3.50 one off cost, i couldnt live without it.

Although Drop Box, Live Drive, iCloud etc are great for storage and backup purposes, or for transferring files from one location to another, Jay specifically asks for a way of editing files in a central location, over the Internet. You wouldn't do that with Drop Box.

Why not?

Find file in "Finder" (in the specific drop box side icon)
Open file
Save file

Done...

It simply doesn't have the reliability of NFS or AFS. I'm sure that a single user could probably use it without problem (ensuring regular backups) but I'd certainly not advocate using it as a collaborative cloud file system. We've found it to be slow, renaming files can be a total pain, and sometimes saves didn't save.

That's just me though, I know of people who swear by it, but I've experienced flaws.
