Hello from Kent
« on: September 20, 2012, 10:33:39 pm »
Hi

Just purchased my third Golf (two previous Mk4's - a 1.8T and 1.9 GT TDI 130). I now have an 06 Tornado Red GT TDI 140 with FVWSH and 55K on the clock.

Got it for a good price but it does need a little attention to the paintwork:
1) some rust on the rear arch - some bubbing and a little bit of paint flaking off and more inside the arch
2) rear bumpr was replaced a few years back but the colour match compared to the rear quarter panels is not great in certain lights (OK compared to the boot)

Is it worth taking to VW regarding the rust?? Also, should a good bodyshop be able to get a near perfect match on the bumper??

Aside from this im either going to refurb the standard wheels in anthracite or get some 17 Monzas (as the car has four nearly new Michelin tyres, so I want to keep to 17 inch for now).

Also fancy a GTI gear knob and chrome pedals - is the accelarator pedal easy to do?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome along bud!  :drinking:

Sounds like its in need of some serious TLC.  :scared:  Read this thread about the rust issue, should give you somewhere to start.

Yes a body shop (a good one) will be able to sort the paint out, they usually blend one panel into another so it does not notice. You may well benefit from taking your new purchase to a pro Detailer, lots of great ones on here and all with loads of very happy customers from the forum, check out the detailing thread here. Look at the "Pro Detailers Work" section

As for the wheels, wait and get some 18 Monza's with rubber fitted, they appear on here from time to time. Personal choice, Monza Shadows.

Get some pics up and let's av a look at your new toy.

Cheers

The rest of the car is pretty good to be honest, paricularly the interior - I just suffer severly from perfectionism!! So only a little tlc i hope. The rust is no more than a few mm at the moment. Ill take it to VW and see what they say. I had rust on my Mk4 2004 its rather annoying for such a good car.

I believe Kelly at KDS in Gillingham is a particularly good detailier, but not sure if they only do detailing or whether they do any paintwork as well...

Thanks

Nothing wrong than a bit of OCD, lots of it here fella!  :signLOL:

Once the body shop has done there thing then take it to a Detailer to work there magic. It will look better than when it left the factory. Then you can start modding that puppy.
