Ed 30 air con issues
« on: September 10, 2012, 12:58:57 pm »
Hi everyone, I have just bought an 08 plate Ed30 and its awesome but the air con doesn’t work.  The blowers all work fine but I cant get really cold air out of it.  The chap I bought it from said he had it regassed a few weeks ago.  When I press the A/C button to turn it on/ off there is no change in engine noise or any other different sounds.  Its going in to  an air con specialist on Friday but I just wondered if anyone else had any ideas please?  Is it likely to be an electrical or mechanical issue?  Any advice is much appreciated, thanks in advance, Matt.

The first thing to check is that the fan in the engine bay rotates when you switch the a/c on. If it does not turn then you may have an issue with the high pressure switch (like I did) or an issue with the compressor. If the fan rotates when you turn the a/c om but no cold air then it will be another problem, others may be able to help. (there are 2 fans)

May be simpler than that...

With the engine up to temp, turn on the ac and you should see both fans turning. If not then the smaller fan will most likely be the one at fault..that's what I had on mine and with similar symptoms- not very cold ac, despite regasses..

I have the same issue, when I turn the air con on nothing happens. scanned it with VCDS and I got this:

1 Fault Found:
00229 - Refrigerant Pressure
002 - Lower Limit Exceeded

Changed the pressure switch and still nothing happens.

Do you mean the fans in front of the engine? If so, neither of them are turning when the engine is warm with the air con on and off.

It sounds like you either have a leak, maybe in the high pressure switch, or a fault with the compressor. If it is the switch these are around £50. If there is a fault with the compressor it could be expensive.

Right, just got back from having my air con looked at and it's the condenser that's the problem. Apparently there is a shroud that covers the condenser and it has just chafed a hole in it and the gas has all gone. I was told that vw know about this and have since spaced them off 5mm or so. A new condenser and a regas should see it right! Hope this helps some of you too!

I have exactly the same problem as you....I'm taking mine back to the dealer on Friday.

Out of interest - how much did the repair set you back?

Off the top of my head it was about 400 quid for whole job- parts, labour regas etc. I think it was a fairly long job but I also had the cam belt and water pump etc done while they were in there. I will have a proper look at the bill when I get home tomorrow and let you know for definite.
