Master/Slave cylinder issues?
« on: September 19, 2012, 09:14:56 pm »
Hi guys, my clutch pedal has been slow to return.

tried a bleed - no different. no signs of weeping anywhere.

heard a noise and pipewerx identified it as the clutch pipe union (can be seen at the back of your engine bay behind the battery) which has been changed today. now i need to drive it properly as only drove the 1.5 miles back home but think the pedal may still be slow to return.

next thing to change would be master cylinder - anyone know how much these are and labour involved?

I know slave cylinder is a big job and this was changed by Steve Stattlers anyway in May 2011 when clutch and diff went in.

any thoughts?

cheers

I've changed plenty of masters.  Most of them on my own car.  It's an hour job with the part costing around 60 quid iirc.

Have you removed the restrictor in the bleed block?  This helps loads with the return.

hi alex, thanks for that. not sure but i dont think so only thing that was replaced so far was the above part which is a kind of compressor is it? was only a £50.00 part inc VAT. how do you get to the restrictor you have mentioned? probably not something i could do.

You need to remove the bleed block then pull out the bleed screw section.  There is a small piece of plastic inside the block that needs to be removed.  Replace everything then bleed it all up again.

ok thanks Alex, drove the car this morning and return on clutch is no better if not slightly worse, no bizarre noise though so looks liek that part changed needed changing anyway. not too bothered if master cylinder needs changing if that resolves it but will be gutted if clutch/slave cylinder needs replacing  :scared:

I also have this problem

Had the master changed (behind the pedal box)
And that made no real difference.

Had it bled multiple times but after a day or two the pedal looses resistance and is then slow to return

One thing I've noticed is that if the pedal sticks and I accelerate the pedal 're-pressurises' and pops up

I too am worried that it could be my slave/clutch cylinder.
Although I've had a slight bearing type noise from 5th gear (6 speed box)

Sorry to resurrect this thread 18 months after.

Had a new clutch/ flywheel and slave cylinder while the box was open.

Problem is now fixed!!
