Strange Noises heard when slow moving/ speed bumps etc
« on: September 20, 2012, 01:22:44 pm »
Just joined a local golf course that has some speed bumps on the way in (8 of them!  ) .

Heard a noise leaving today when going over one of the speed bumps (at 10mph) it was a mtallic rattle sound from underneath (sounded to be near front?), sounded like someone clanking 2 metal disks together  :surprised:

Any clues on that?.

Also on way home (in Manual mode in DSG), at about 10-15mph going from 2nd to 1st gear (approcahing roundabout) it made a "Clunk" noise (I know it's not much to go on), to me it sounded like either a engine mount or possibly bushing/joint etc?, any clues for common faults in those cases (I know about broken springs but an unsure of that?).

You sure it's nothing to do with your exhaust banging against something underneath?? If you can remember, mine did that and i had to get it adjusted, heh presto, it then stopped!!  :driver:

.
ARB bush mount? Check for anything ARB related such as contact with something.

So, it's a 'clunk' and couldn't be described as a 'chirp'? I reckon it will be suspension related if it happens over speed bumps.

ONe was a metalllic sound (like 2 metal disks clinking together) and the other when changing down was deffo a clunk!, thought it might be engine mount or something related?

It's often so difficult to pin point a sound and especially only by description via cyberspace.

Brake caliper / dust shield related?  I'm grasping at straws here trying to help!

Can you get a trusted friend to drive slowly over a speed bump while you lie down alongside it (though obviously not as a human speed bump!!). You could always borrow one of your mate's Police uniform and pretend to be a 'sleeping policeman' as speed bumps are sometimes called. Sorry, but actually I was being serious about being alongside. It would have to be a very quiet road of course.

You could always make your own speed bump to test where the noise is coming from:

Can you replicate it just by pushing and pulling the car by hand when stationary?

I have never heard the clunk before, but the metallic noise I heard twice now.

I will see if I can get up to local VW indie and get them to have alook (might as well get an oil change while im there!)

....Virtually impossible on a car with modified suspension etc but I don't think his is modified. On the hand, I expect you could shift it, Ian!

ABS, or more than likely a stone stuck between your disc and stone guard.  :happy2:

Complete nonsense Robin.
That's how my fooked top mounts were diagnosed by JKM. Not bad for a 20k car.

....Well, my suspension is so stiff that I can't push and pull the bodywork enough by hand to diagnose a clunk. JKM, as you know, have huge experience in these matters.

I have had a stone in disk before, familiar with that sound (Scrapin/screech  :happy2:), its not that, it sounds like something loose or worn
