Front Wheel/Gearbox Noise
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:37:35 pm »
I've had a bit of an issue with my GTI for a few months now. I'm getting a humming/whiring noise from the front, sound like its the N/S wheel. I've just had new tyres on the front, Goodyear F1s, and the noise has reduced a little; but it's still there. The noise from the wheels is at it's loudest at ~30 mph in whatever gear. I'm sure it is coming from the front but I've read that others had a similar issue and it turned out to be the rear bearings.

On a similar note, pulling away in first and keeping it in that gear there is quite a pronounced noise from the gearbox, this goes if put into neutral. Is this normal? I think my slave cylinder needs changing also as i struggle to select a gear sometimes or it jerks forward when still and put into first. Not sure if these are related to the wheel noise so I'll probable try to fix that first!

Might change front wheel bearing next but thought I'd ask incase anyone has had any experience with this issue. Cheers.

I have the GY's and I still get a little noise at around that speed. I have 18in monza's which should make more noise than 17's.

You could always jack the car up and feel for any play in the wheel to check the bearing

Had similar rumbling noise soon after I bought my car.

My GTI is an 06 plate with 18" Monza 2 with Dunlop tyres.

Check tyres are wearing evenly and consider wheel balancing and wheel alignment check. Both are relatively cheap. This solved the issue for me and stopped uneven tyre wear before it was too late and tyres needed replacing early.

Pot holes and speed bumps can throw the alignment out, which was my issue. Alignment at VW indy cost just approx £60.

Good luck  :driver:

Cheers for the replies.

Had the wheel up and checked for play, no movement at all. The noise is at its loudest at 30mph in any gear now. I've had the wheels balanced when the new tyres went on. Going to do the wheel bearing today then alignment and see how that works out.

Going back to the seperate gearbox noise, does anyone with a manual have that noise in 1/2 gear? Doesn't happen in any other gear just 1st and 2nd.

I had dunlops on mine originally. They made it sound like a road roller

Glad to see the back of them  :happy2:

I seem to have an oscillating noise from my gearbox in the lower gears when trundling around car parks etc.!

....The fact that the sound goes when you put it into neutral strongly suggests it's gearbox related.

However, you saying that the noise is loudest at ~30 mph in whatever gear, seems to contradict what you said about it going away in neutral. It must be a Manual gearbox because you would not want to put it into neutral while driving in DSG.

I get a lovely whine in 1st gear on DSG, rather like a reverse gear whine, but I guess you are describing a different sound to a gearbox whine.

I think it's normal to get nice (I think they're nice but ETTO) noises when "trundling" (great word, Jim!).

I have run several sets of Goodyear Asymmetric 1's and now 2's and don't hear any tyre noise.

The two noises are separate issues, sorry, should have made that a bit clearer. :happy2:

The noise from the wheels is present at 30mph. I changed the NS bearing yesterday, still no different. Might change the OS to be sure.

I get a 1st / 2nd gear whine which you notice more when you go around roundabouts especially if the window is down.

Was there any movement in the wheel before you replaced the bearing?

Do you have 18in wheels?

There was a tiny bit of movement, nothing too bad though. The bearing did feel a bit rough when I removed it and spun it. Need to check the OS wheel. Nope, I'm on 17s.

Bumping an old thread here

My Leon (6 speed manual 02Q) has developed a whining noise at around 30mph, present whether accelerating, overrun or even coasting in neutral (even with engine off!) although its worse when gently accelerating from this speed in 3/4/5 gear. It happened overnight, car was fine in the evening and i noticed it straightaway when approaching 30mph the next morning

Drives faultlessly, smooth, engages gears, no vibrations etc. Just sounds like a diff whining type noise that gets higher-pitched the faster you go (so road speed related). Starts at 25mph, at its loudest by 30mph, very feint by 35mph but if you accelerate gently you can just about hear it all the way to 45-50 mph, but its very very quiet by 40mph.

Anyone had this before? Not a lot of info online. Anything i can check or rule out or am i looking at a box? If so, anyone have a decent box? There's no play at the wheels, which i've spun by hand but can not hear/replicate this noise.

Hope somebody can help as its driving me mad, and i keep being told to just leave it to get worse

Cheers

Anyone? I did take this video a couple of weeks ago when it first started. Not the best as my phone was in it's cradle and doesn't pick it up very well but you can hear the whine.

Was hoping someone like @vRSAlex  would have an idea, being the guru that he is

Input shaft bearing? If it is this you need to catch it fairly quickly as I found out last year. The main bearing will eventually spin inside the g.box casing where it is located and destroy the gearbox casing boring a larger diameter hole than there is meant to be.

Stevie.
