Upgraded to RNS510 - Volume level, better but still lacking, speaker upgrade????

I recently changed to an RNS510, sounds great and the unit itself is fantastic and can't recommend them enough.

The sounds good but slightly lacking on either CD or media function, the radio function volume & sound quality is definitely better.

When turned up to around 70% volume using the CD or media function the sound seems to fade somewhat and if you turn it up any louder it gets worse.

Is the RNS510 amp too much for the standard GTI speakers and would I benefit from a speaker upgrade?

Or am I missing something obvious here?

IIRC the standard speakers can't handle the full output from the HU. Even though the RNS is better, you still get clipping. I'd suggest next step is upgraded speakers+/- amp. Next step after than would be a non oem HU.

Tried changing the media aux setting to high? iirc it's set to medium as default.

Erm I'm a bit of a novice (muppet) with these but it came straight out of Deako's Polo GTI on here so I'm assuming it was. It's a 'version F' I think so one of the newer types. I think Stealth describes it pretty well when he say's 'fade' as it does fade in quality/volume when you turn it up loud.

It's certainly not quiet but I was expecting a little more from it

I upgraded from a RCD300 but I know the previous owner had an RNS510 fitted at some point too before switching back before selling to me.

In that case I think you'll need to swap the pin 2 and 3 wires again if it's not already been re-done.

Thanks for the info, can you elaborate on why's n how's of that Bacillus? I fitted it myself so can get it out again easily enough.

Do you still have the RCD300 available as it would be helpful to see the pin out diagram at the top of the unit to be certain of giving you the correct advice.

This is the pin out for my rcd500. Notice that cd ground on the rcd500 at pin 2 whilst pin 3 has no wire


And this is the pin out for the rns510. Note the cd ground is at pin 3


For my setup I just had to move the black ground wire from pin 2 to pin 3 (circled in red) without having to do anything else.

I stand corrected.......I have an RCD500 which is right next to me.

It reads exactly the same as your diagram!

So I need to change the actual connector pin arrangement, do I need a special tool to do this Bacillus?

I used a small jewellers screwdriver to get the wire out of the head unit connector.
It's just a matter of removing the relevent part of the connector , it unclips and slides out, then use the screwdriver to press on the small metal retaining prong whilst gently pulling on the wire. I suspect even the end of a paper clip would suffice instead of the screwdriver. Next just fully push the wire into pin 3 position, it'll lock in and you're done.

As for coding, do you see the nav compass next to the clock display? If you don't then you need to get the unit properly coded.
