monza v monza shadows
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:16:45 am »
hi guys, just bought my car and i like the monza 18 alloys but i need new tyres, the mk6 monzas which i beleive are the shadow 2 with the dark colour around the circular bit look nice,,,, do you think the mark 5 gti looks better with the normal monzas which are all the same colour finish or should i upgrade to the dark ones, seen them for around £340 brand new but replicas obviouslly.
the ones i have are brand new when i bought the car as the old ones where curbed etc and dealer said the diff in price for refurbing them was not that much dif than him putting new ones on so thats what he did to my delight but cant get these darker ones out of my mind.
because i have to buy new tyres i can get a deal on the new alloys if bought with tyres so may only cost me around £300 for a new set then i will just sell the ones that come off so that is the way i am thinking,,,,, do they look better ??? if anyone has any pics of the mk5 with both kinds of wheels on them i would appreciate it, also are the wheels i have easier to keep than the shadows with regards to stone chips, scuffing durability etc.
thanks guys

hi there thanks for my first ever reply,,,,,
yeah your new wheels look better than the old, dont like the gti with dark wheels for some reason makes the car look like something other than a golf gti in my eyes, your new ones look cool though, noticed the ones i have are replicas but to be honest after reading some feedback on replicas there doesnt seem to be any real difference as long as they come from a good shop of which mine did,,, screw paying £450 a wheel from vw only to cringe when the inevitable first gouge comes out of them
if i am right you have normal monza alloys here, or are they monza 2 alloys, dont know the difference yet but they look the same as mine and i guess the shadows are the ones with the dark circles ?

.
The Monza 17" alloys are the only OEM ones which are one colour - All silver.

The Monza 18" on the Mk5 GTI are diamond-cut clear lacquered and with grey painted 'inserts'.

The Monza 18" on the Mk6 GTI are called "Monza Shadows" are diamond-cut etc but with black painted 'inserts'.

If you ever want to sell replica versions in the future they will be probably be much more difficult to sell. Folks on this forum tend to prefer the genuine ones.

not convinced it is worth paying the genuine prices for the wheels when there is no real difference to the quality of the product !
apart from having a vw badge etc stamped on the inside of the wheel is there any point bearing in mind these kind off alloys are so easily damaged and may only last a few years before refurb needed or replacement, is there any real point paying double the price at least for genuine ones ?
also are the monzas refurbishable due to the diamond cut etc as my local garage said they would need to be posted away to be done and will take 2 weeks, is this just because they are diamond cut ?

....BBS developed and patented their Hollow Wheel Technology on the OEM Monza specifically for the Mk5 GTI. So I think you'll find that genuine Monza's are lighter weight and hence more responsive.

My Mk5 GTI has refurbished 18" Monza's with the shadow mk6 effect.   I think it is a specialist job to have the refurbed but mine were done in 3 days, I would have a look around in your area to find somewhere that has the right equipment and skill to do the job if you dont want to wait 2 weeks.

thanks, your wheels look cool, i am starting to think the shadow monzas look better than the all silver ones i have, is there any durability difference between the mk6 shadows and the mk5 monzas as im a bit concerned about the fragility of the monzas in general as i have only just got the car and the wheels where new when i got it ( some stupid twt in the selling garage put back on 3.5mm tyres onto the new wheels pfff ) are the monzas in general really really easy to mark in comparison to something like the standard r32 alloys, i agree they look the best wheel for the gti but really are they impossible to keep in good cond ?
i am very carefull not to kurb wheels but potholes etc will have there toll,,,, just ned to find out how strong they are etc
thanks

hi rob, yes they look refurbed, places like kwik fit used to do this until they closed up recently, guess it wasnt paying out in that department but i knew the manager and all they done was sanded down and hand sprayed over, looks like that was done to yours but hard to see without close up pic,,, still trying to find out how durable the diamond cut wheels are, are you happy with your wheels or are you going to change them ?

Complete nonsense. I suggest you research the differences between a cast alloy wheel and a forged alloy wheel.

18" monza's refurbed at A1 in Wolverhampton.  Diamond cut shadows now 10 months old, no curbing and been down plenty of potholes.  They're still as good as the day I got them, no whiteworm etc.  I do clean them weekly and they've got a few coats of poorboys wheel sealant on to protect them.
Intention is to take them off for the winter and run the 17" OEM wheels.

Free advertising for the fellas at DMR as well

re andrew parker,,,, rather than just putting a rude comment in( complete nonsense ) if you are going to comment on peoples posts then do it with some helpfull information rather than just being rude.
rather than doing mass research on hundreds of different companies making after market alloys i thought it would be better to ask the people who are driving the same car as most people in the gti forum are here to hep one another and comments like yours are not welcome and also stop newcommers asking questions in the first place.
against your beliefs a lot of people are very happy with the quality of reproduced wheels and dont want to pay £2k for a set of genuine ones, if you know the basic difference then great, post it, if all you have is a rude reply then shove it and post your own rubbish so people can ignore you.

re bigmig, thanks for that, your car looks brand new and lovely, are your wheels genuine or replicas ?
u say u use poorboys wheel sealant,,,, what do u actually use to clean them before applying that ?
is the sealant just wiped on ? and do u apply it only after cleaning ie just one coat every time because obviouslly what you are doing is working fine and looks a winner, look forward to your reply
