Selling a car?
« on: September 25, 2012, 10:02:28 am »
Hi, this is not an advert, just looking for some advice.

The most expensive car I've sold was £2000 and the buyer paid cash. But I'm wanting to sell my 2005GTI for about £7000.

I bought the car from a dealer so I paid card but how would I sell this? Would the buyer give me a cheque and I wait for it to clear before letting the car go or would they pay cash?

Any advice would be great! Really don't want to sell but travelling 35 miles a day with these petrol prices, I can't justify keeping it :(

Thanks,

Dan

Are you selling it privately?

If so, best way would be straight cash, or a bank transfer. Never sign the car over if you haven't received the payment!

Do NOT even reply to anyone emailing about your car if they want to pay with Paypal!, it's all a con!

Yeah privately. Ah ok, just seems like a lot of cash! Bank transfer sounds sensible, I guess that would mean 2 viewings for them.

Thanks!

Ah ok won't do Paypal, don't think I'll put it on ebay or autotrader, last time I had a car on autotrader I got loads of foreign people saying they would come over from abroad... A bit scary! Was only a battered up mk2gti haha

I paid for my Ed30 in cash, took 5-10 mins to count it.

MK2 Gti's would be popular in Europe so that is probably why lol.

But they can do a bank transfer straight after they have viewed the car these days. Online banking along with a card reader!

Yeah and paypal has a charge for sending money so don't trust them, unless you actually see the money in your account.

FORGET PAYPAL ENTIRELY, IF YOU SELL SOMETHING WITH PAYPAL YOU HAVE TO HAVE PROOF OF DELIVERY OTHERWISE SELLER CAN CLAIM MONEY BACK, YOU CAN'T PROVE DELIVEREY ON A CAR COLLECTED!. DO NOT ACCEPT PAYPAL FULL STOP!.

:fighting2: Get a deposit if someone is really interested. Then get the rest cash or bank transfer

Proof of delivery? You're selling a car here, which you would sign over using a V5?

But it is true, because the money sent on paypal might not be his own money, and the person whose money it actually was, can try and claim it back.

i used to sell cars privatelly, do cash only on this i would say, £7k aint a lot but check the notes for forgeries, first viewing needs a deposit and cash on collection, take him in the house and sit down to do the paperwork, do not use paypal.
once all cash is counted then do the transfer of the v5, then hand over keys,,, job done

Haha well Ill take the Half of £10k now

Thanks for the advice everyone! It's a shame that we have to be so cautious selling, but the reality is that there are thousands of dishonest people out there!  :sad1:
