My 6 year old MK5 GTI came to a grinding and crunching halt this week, fortunately in a side street at 5 mph.
It seems that the nearside drive shaft had come away from the gearbox. The flange bolts were missing and there was gearbox oil all over the road.
The gearbox is damaged and the repair job is quoted at over £4k.
Previously the car had suffered a failure to an engine mount bolt as a result of the garage reusing the original bolt instead of a new one after a cam belt change.
Some questions....
Anyone ever experienced anything like this?
Any way the two events might be related?
any thought appreciated
