.
What Mac OS is your "old white MacBook" currently running?

I assume your MacBook has an Intel Mac processor, otherwise it can't run Snow Leopard.

If no-one here tells you how to upgrade your OS, try looking/asking on Apple Discussions:  https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa

I think you may have to buy 10.7 from the App Store and then further update it to 10.7.5 to then get the version of iTunes you want.

Snow Leopard 10.6 is a great OS and very well thought of but technology never stands still. I have only recently moved to Lion 10.7 from 10.6 and won't bother going to 10.8 Mountain Lion for a while.

HTH

Thanks for the info RR , been looking on the apple site and they hVe discontinued downloads for snow leopard so ill have to get hold of a hard copy from eBay or amazon. Trying to avoid going down that route unless anyone has the software somewhere in there archive that they don't need.

If you are going to have to buy a Snow Leopard somewhere, why not buy a Lion (better house trained?) and also have the important advantage of having Apple Support and, even more importantly, being able to stay in the future upgrade path more easily and safely than an eBay/Amazon route.

Why does it have to be a hard copy? You can copy/move a downloaded installer onto a disc and then you have a hard copy backup.

Lion is not expensive - Under £20? You could even buy and jump straight onto Mountain Lion 10.8.

Not sure if I read it wrong or not , but thought you cannot upgrade directly to lion from os 10.5.8 without installing leopard and then you have to update leopard before upgrading to lion.  Confused.com

....I don't know about that. Perhaps you have to buy 10.6 and then buy 10.7. A phone call to Apple will confirm if you can buy 10.7, or 10.8, and clean install it your particular Mac. Perhaps it costs more to buy an OS than an OS upgrade.

As no-one else has posted with a confident answer yet, I would ask the question on Apple Discussions - Apple techies post answers there unofficially.
