my understanding is that a 40 grade oil will be thicker at 100 degrees than a 30, is this a good or bad thing? I don't know

In theory its better for engines which run quite hot, ie the TFSI. (sorry for my blunt post... wasnt mean to come across like that )

Well... my car is in for a service on monday and ill get Alex to check the oil level, ive not put a drop in mine since the last service 10,000 miles ago.
I saw somebody on here nicely explain it the other day. They said something along the lines of, if you drive like Miss Daisy you'll hardly use any oil, but if you drive like a hooligan it will absolutely slurp it down!
