I have just recently got Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 ester synthetic oil for high performance engines. never tryed it before but was a decent price and with 20% off eveything at opieoils thought i might aswell try it .

as richwig83  says a thicker oil on a high preformance car will heat the oil up more ... thining it down to 5w30 in essence.  :happy2:

Not quite. The engine oil should be the same temperature but at running temp. the 5w40 will remain thicker than 5w30.

I saw somebody on here nicely explain it the other day. They said something along the lines of, if you drive like Miss Daisy you'll hardly use any oil, but if you drive like a hooligan it will absolutely slurp it down!

not sure about that pal, I've done numerous 1/4's, 6 trackdays, you get the picture and it still uses very, very little. I just think some do, some don't  :happy2:

Fair enough, you're probably right, I just liked the wording they used
Mines never used much oil really and over the years it's been driven both hard and gently

Well... my car is in for a service on monday and ill get Alex to check the oil level, ive not put a drop in mine since the last service 10,000 miles ago.

Its funny, some do some don't. My first GTI would use a fair bit, but the ED30 and S3 which both I got new did/have never used any oil. Could be down to the running in procedure???? or lack of it

I have had several brand new cars over the years - Golf GTi 16v, Cosworths, Scooby sti's, Honda type R's, lotus Elise etc. I never ran them in for more than 100 miles and none of them used an appreciable amount of oil.

A pal of mines Nissan saloon thing is driven like miss daisy on a fuel economy run and uses a liter every 1200 miles. Must be like a 2 stroke!

Alex recommended the 5W-40 for mapped engines which work harder than VW standards and hence would benefit from a different oil. If the car is standard, then 5W-30 is fine.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I have 5w30 edge professional in mine. Will the 5w40 be OK just for topping up with?
