Always had a bit ot a love/hate relationship with these as used to lust after a 22b/old style impreza turbo, then when they changed the looks kinda fell out of love with them and then they made it into a hatchback!

Have always though though driving one would have distinct advantages over a fwd VW.

And now... I see they have slashed £6k off the asking price and for another £1500 you can get the upgrade to take it to 335bhp and sub 5.0 seconds to 60.

tempting or still not your cup of tea?

runningc osts and service and the engine bottom ends are prone for going ssen a lot of these rattleing when they come in for service

i had the bug eye sit type uk and being honest they are crap just cost silly money on fuel and for the power they get off the line quick but after that are a little bland being honest and yes i have driven a few and worked with Mitsubishi for years so go drive an evo too while your looking

interesting matt, so take it you rate the Evo as having the edge? not looking at selling the Eddie for one of these anyway just thought it was a tempting price bang per buck

Evos always trump scoobies.

The evo guys say scoobies have chocolate engines. Dunno if thats just banter though

Not sure whether thats true as Top Gear hated the Subaru but it still beat the Evo X didn't it when the Stig drove it?
The P1 was notoriously bad for bottom end failures but think it was a one off.
They have very strong engines and Evo's need servicing every 6k.
Subarus don't.
So which has the chocolate engine?
Any day of the week I would take my WRX PPP 2.5 'Hawkeye' back over my Golf.
The reason I won't is the wife hated it! Not the car but the image. I couldn't give a monkeys tbh.
I am a VW fanboy but that was/is a great car.
It 'only' had 280bhp but would have destroyed me everywhere.
No traction, a proper B road car.
All IMHO :signLOL:

Had a 2000 WRX and a 2005 STi Prodrive (from new), which was 310bhp and 4.6 to 60mph...

Pro:
Fast, stupidly fast. Overtake? No problem, sir.
Great handling. Corners? Slow down? Pah!
Good tyre life (yes, really)
Reliable
Subaru warranty & customer care is great

Con:
Patchy dealer network
Running costs are high (if you get the PPP to boost bhp, you're on V Power only)
My average 22mpg, best 27mpg on a long run at 70mph on the A1
A set of front pads are +£300
Insurance is difficult to get on a PPP car as many brokers class it as modified. I had 18years clean licence & full NBC, garaged and paid £900 comp.
Attracts attention from nob heads who will cheerfully scratch your car/vandalise it
Very few creature comforts in the cabin
It gets very loud at motorway speeds
Cam belt change & service at 50-60k is eyewateringly expensive.

There's a reason that Subaru are trying to shift these with finance deals; thirsty niche cars like this are suffering falling sales, increasing insurance costs and poor residuals. But I'm glad I had one. But I wouldn't give my GTI back to get one again...
