Difficult Decision - Selling Up
« on: October 01, 2012, 08:19:03 am »
Ok, difficult decision here. I’m thinking of selling up in the next month or so. So how do I go about it? I’ve modified my car a fair bit over the last 18 months/20k miles.

Do I remove the majority of the mods and sell as standard (appeal to a wider audience) or do I sell it as is (and hopefully sell for a higher value). The car stands like this at the moment:

2004 ‘54’ VW Golf GT TDi 140
98k miles (approx 1200 per month)
Services 90k, due at 100k
VW Serviced to
Factory Extras - Dual Climatatronics, Convenience Pack (Auto Wipers, Rain Sensor, Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror, Auto Headlights), Armrest
Cruise Control Retrofitted (Star Performance, Kirkcaldy)

Off the top of my head I’ve added:

- GTI Headlights
- Votex Front Valance Colour Coded
- Votex Rear Roof  Spoiler
- GTI Rear Valance Colour Coded
- Shark Perfomance Remap 182 bhp.
- Whiteline Anti-Lift Kit (WALK)
- Mk6 Golf Boot Handle Colour Coded
- CAN Gateway 7N0 907 530 C
- 30 Byte Highline CECM
- Cornering Foglights
- Lowered 30mm on Eibach Pro Springs
- 312mm Front Brakes & HEL Braided Front Brake Lines
- 17” GTI Monza Alloy Wheels (with Nokian Winter Tyres)
  ( or choice of:-
    - VW 18” .:R36 Omanyt Alloys new Kumho tyres
    - 16” Imola Alloys with and nearly new Winter Tyres)
- RCD510 6 CD Radio
- Milltek Turbo Back Stainless Exhaust
- MDI Armrest Kit (not fitted yet)
- STS Unit from Shark Performance
- Black Leather Door cards (not fitted either).

Most of the above will remain on the car as it it not financially viable to remove. The following will be the first/easiest to remove and sell seperately:
- 18” Omanyt’s (already off)
- 16" Imola's with Vred & Nankang Winters
- RCD510
- CAN Gateway
- Mk6 CECM
- Highline CECM
- MDI Unit
- Remap (with STS)
- Milltek TBE
- Black Leather Doorcards (not fitted)
- Votex Front Lip and GTI Rear Valance

The car will come with two new wings (October 15th) and a repaired Bootlid (around the handle) so will be rust free bodywork.

Let me know what your thoughts are, particularly if you have sold up recently or are in the same boat as me at the minute. Thanks in advance.

Off topic I know but how come you decided to sell, have you got your eyes on something else?

In a way, yes. I have my eyes on a house/flat. Hoping to move out in the next 18 months so am hoping to sell up and buy a cheap run about (~£1000). The amount I get from my car sale and the amount I'd save per month not paying up a car will help me put a significant deposit together. I will get back into a decent car (hopefully) once I have my own place sorted.

I'm in a similar boat, every mod I have on my Golf is OEM and I intend to keep them all on when selling, mainly because it makes it a nice, well specced example. There are loads of TDI's for sale at the minute, a lot of them very basic so you will do well keeping some things in.

May be interested in the 17" wheels with M&S tyres if you're selling them? If I do get another car I'll need at least 17s for them to fit.
Used to have Edition 30 - number 009 and a GT TDI 140.
Now have an S4 B8 Avant (stage 2)

Whether to sell as modded or back to standard is always a difficult decision.

Even though I am interested in your Votex rear roof spoiler I would suggest offering your car for sale here as modded but if it doesn't sell quickly enough for you, then go back to standard and offer her to the open market where buyers probably prefer an unmodified car.

I think it depends on which mods you have to sell separately as to which selling option gets you more money.

Good Luck with the house/flat eitherway  :happy2:

I think for some mods the increased appeal would mean it's worth leaving them on - such as the GTI headlights

Then for some mods I'd imagine that having them removed would not be worth it financially - my example here would be the WALK

And the remaining would be worth selling on

I think you'd be best figuring out which is which and proceeding accordingly. If I ever sell up that's how I'd do it
2006 Phantom Black A3 2.0T S-Line

MODS : '09 tail lights | TT vents | Bilstein B14 | RNS-E 2010 | AMI | AKS Tuning custom CAI | Titanium BBS VZs | NQS BBK | WALK | Autotech RARB | Bluemotion aero | Blueflame TBE | Autotech HPFP | MY11 Wing Mirrors | Bluetooth | S3 Intercooler

First post updated to say what I really meant. Most mods like the WALK, etc will be staying on as it'd cost more to remove them. Thanks for the advice.  :happy2:

Selling the car itself if difficult enough for me.  :sad1: Your suggested method is probably the best one. Selling the car as it stands will be a lot less work for me, should go for a better price and quicker than stripping parts off. I'll try it for sale on here first then if I have to I'll start going back to standard(ish). I'll reply to your PM in a minute.  :happy2:

I always put cars back to standard, makes them easier to sell, & 9 times out of 10 you end up getting far more out of the car anyway.

Yeah I know what you mean. I had a quick look thru the Cars for Sale on here and there is quite a few for sale at the min.
The car is on the Monza's and Nokian WRG2's at the minute. To be honest these are a great tyre so will probably be the last set of wheels I sell. If I manage to sell the 18's and 16's seperately from the car I will probably put other tyres on the 17's to go with the car and keep the Nokian's. Sorry to be selfish but they are seriously good tyres.  :P

Noted. I have done a few quick calculations and I'd definitely get more from selling everything seperately. I'll probably try and get a balance between:

- removing EVERYTHING and selling the car cheap, and
- leaving every mod on and trying to get a premium for the car.

Not a problem, I don't need a set just yet and don't blame you for holding onto something good.

I would keep certain mods such as the black headlights, CAN gateway, stereo, 312mm brakes as these are mods that will appeal to buyers. Things like the CECM I'd remove, if you have the old bits to go in.

Ill put my 2pence in mate my car was a cat c write off so I knew coming to sell would be hard but been one of the highest spec'd golf GT's in the country I had every thing from the car to sell, I first had the car up for £6k but after a month of nothing I decided to split

I got £2500 for the car and ended up making including the car just short of £7k so it was a no brainer to split it.

I still have other stuff that was taken off the car in the shed just haven't had time to get shot of them.

Good luck mate what ever you do

So I’ve had a think over selling the Golf. I’d like to sell it as it stands as I think the car stands, looks and goes better with the following mods. If I don’t get much interest I will consider returning it almost back to standard. At present the car is fitted with the following:

Colour Coded
-GTI Rear Valance (£35)
-Votex Front Valance (£60
)
-Votex Roof Spoiler
-Mk6 3D Boot Badge (£35)
------------------------------
GTI Black Insert Headlights
------------------------------
Eibach Pro LoweringSprings
312mm Brake Discs and Calipers (£50)
HEL Braided Hoses (Front)
Whiteline Anti-Lift Kit (WALK)
------------------------------
CAN Gateway
RCD510 (£200)
Mk6 30 byte Highend CECM (£100 can come pre-coded)

------------------------------
Shark Performance Remap (with STS unit) (£80 for STS)
Milltek Turbo Back Exhaust GT80 twin tips (£350)

The parts marked in bold (and with a price) will be removed if not enough interest in the car, and will be offered for sale for the stated price. The car will be advertised shortly (next 2-3 weeks) with all of the above fitted and the option of 18” Omanyt’s.

Removing the bold marked parts will probably reduce the car’s price £1000 or so.

Other parts not yet fitted will also be for sale:

-18x8” ET44 .:R36 Omanyt Alloys with 225/40/18 Kumho Ecsta Ku37s less than 1100 miles (will be sold separately £750 or with car for an agreed price)
-17” Monza Alloys with Nokian WRG2 Winter Tyres 225/45/17 (currently fitted to the car so will be included in sale)
-16” Imola Alloys with Vredestein & Nankang Winter Tyres 205/55/16 (£400)
-5 Door Black Leather Door Cards (£50)
-Armrest MDI Kit with Wiring Loom and iPod/iPhone adaptor (£95)

Full VW Service til 78k miles, VW Specialist service at 90k, due at 100k miles (Car will be service if it reaches the 100k mark or if an agreement is made with buyer).
Current 98k miles
MOT April 2013
Tax til end of Feb 2013
New wings & Repaired Bootlid (at a cost of £160) due October 15th
New rear discs and pads (due this week - 1st week Oct)

This is not a for sale advert (yet) so I'm contining to post in the Random Chat Section. Give me and idea of pricing, I obviously have a figure in my head of what the car costs but would like opinions on what it's realistically worth modded or standard(ish).

Cheers  :happy2:
