Parking Sensors not working
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:08:03 am »
Sounds like the rear parking sensors aren't working on my 5dr as when I select reverse, I hear a noise akin to a teenage slasher movie!

Is there a easy way to tell which sensor is duff?

Mine made a horrible noise when selecting reverse not so long ago & I thought a sensor had gone but after giving them all a clean everything worked again!

My new 58 plate GTI has these fitted , I think mine are dealer fitted though , could you order them factory fit on the Mk5 or are they all dealer ones? They will save me a few bob , I reversed into something twice in my Red 05 GTI!

Put the ignition on second switch so you have dash lights, put the car in reverse and rub your finger across the sensors gently and you should be able to feel them pulsing if one isnt then there is your problem,if none are then it could have a system that if one doesnt then they all dont work which could mean wiring or the main parking sensor unit,

If your getting a contstant noise like it is picking up an object again this could be because one isnt fitting flush and is picking up park of its own surround,we had a car with front sensors doing this ages ago which had been to the dealers and alsorts before i fiqured out the front number plate tape was lifting and the inner sensor was picking this up with it been stuck proud of the grille by a couple of mm

Thanks for this.

After trying this, the mid 2 sensors work and the 2 outer ones don't. Looks like i'm after 2 new sensors - Where's the best place to get these from?

If there genuine ones then the dealers as i dont know anyone else to try,you could try checking the supply to the two that dont work or even swap the two working sensors round to the position of the non-working ones by unclipping them,at least your sure by doing the above that your not wasting money buying the sensors without doing a bit of diagnostic work  :happy2:
