I would assume that the ECU needs to know accurate RPM to control ESP, just a guess as I am no spanner monkey  :happy2:

A code would have been nice but I suspect one of your esp sensors isn't working. The sensor uses the wheels rate of rotation to work out if if esp braking needs to occur.
Without traction power is nothing!

Go to a garage that has a clue about what they are doing that can diagnose the fault correctly, provide a detailed explanation and printout as well as a fault code with descriptions of the fault and a quote to replace the requested parts.

Some OBD tools will bring up the RPM sensor as a fault with Bosch ECU systems if the test is carried out without the engine running.

At a guess if you know the RPM and the gear ratio you know how fast the wheels should be turning.  Which may be useful to work out if any wheel has traction.
