High Mileage GTI's
« on: June 15, 2009, 10:44:04 am »
Hi guys, do you know of any problems with a higher mileage GTI? I.e 70,000miles +, if I got one I would want to remap it with a Milltek maybe and some suspension changes, can anyone see a problem with this? I guess they can easily run over 100k miles mapped or not?

Cheers Stu

Mine is currently on 69,500 and to be honest it's running better than ever!

Always been serviced on time and looked after with all genuine VW parts. It's not mapped or anything, but running sweet as a nut!

Should be fine! Depending on how old it is there will be a couple of parts that you may want to update to the latest VW revision, e.g. the DV and the coilpacks.

Some of the early ones suffered steering rack problems, so have a look out for that too.

Other than that, my knowledge is fairly limited on high milage GTI's, but I'm sure an expert will find this topic soon and help you out  :happy2: :happy2:

What was up with the racks on the early ones?  Mine creaks all the time, annoys the hell out of me!

Another thing to watch out on the high milers is CV joints.  I used to work for a big motor factor and we sold loads of them for the "PQ35" platform cars.

With the higher milage examples, please examine the HPFP cam follower for wear as if it "wears through" it will wreck your camshaft lobe requiring an expensive repair.

The VW garage will not usually check this for you as part of a routine service so be warned.

Not too sure, I think people were experiencing a knocking on full-lock, and it was replaced under warranty

86,000 miles and counting.

The steering rack creaked on a left lock; the replacement unit creaks less, but it is still present. Wasn't a big deal.

Well thats another thing to add to the list!

I'm going to find out what goes on them, these things should be reconditionable.

....

I'm at 68k miles and she's serviced every 10k miles and various mods have extended the life of those parts replaced.

Got what I now think is a steering rack creak.

Isn't the rule with a remap a new clutch + cambelt & water pump every 60k to avoid major probs?
