Rear Discs & Pads

Apologies if this is a common question but I got lost in topics about upgrades over OEM when using the search function

My rear disks and pads will soon need to be replaced on my ED30. I just called VW and they quoted £44.39 each for a disc, and £47.34 for a set of pads.

I checked Euro Car PArts as I have a 30% code for them but I'm lost on which discs and pads to select, they have several all by the same manufacturer but the cost varies. What are the differences?

I opted for these as the pads:

I just bought a set of dimpled and grooved discs with mintex pads from mtech

Came in at £80 deliverd

If you are doing them yourself the caliper carrier is a nightmare to remove as space is very limited.

You need a 14mm splined bit (triple square) to remove the carrier, I only had a long one which made access even worse so I would advise a short one

Have you thought of asking a garage to fit them? You'll need a spiral caliper wind back tool as well. I got VW discs and pads fitted parts and labour for £170 at an independent specialist yesterday. £170. :-)

i,ve got pagid pads front and rear on my gti, they were on the car when i bought it. they are good.

I see from searching the forum most people avoid ECP brakes as they're mostly made in China - is there anywhere where I can get OEM (or as close to OEM) parts from ata good price?

My local TPS will only sell to me at the same price the parts dept will at VW

Hey i have to order pads tomorrow too from euro, i know theyre doing 20% offline. where did you get the 30% one from?

This is the problem, if you do a search in here even the most expensive parts from ECP aren't rated as good as OEM, in fact most recommend staying clear. The 30% off makes me wonder if I will ever notice, sure I give my car the beans but it's not modified nor does it ever get tracked.

Can I ask what pads you're going for?

TBH mate im just going to get the pagid ones, i havnt got uprated brakes or performance mods yet so i dont really see the point.. sure itd be nice to have awesome responsive brakes but tbh ive never driven with any other brakes than standard and they do the job fine for me.

I put a set of rear PAGID pads in recently, cheapo ones from ECP and they don't seem any worse than standard... I'm Stage 1.  The Fronts do so much more of the work, it's worth investing in them imho.

I've got Pagid all round on mine and cant fault them... Always use them when doing jobs for family/friends etc and nobody has ever had a issue

Are these supplied from ECP? People say the ones that come from ECP aren't as good quality.

Not sure I'd go with them for the front tbh, but rears should be cool.  My experience of the GTI is that it's nearly always the most expensive pad / disc that's advertised that's the correct fit... LOL>

I was levelling the pressure on my tyres today and noticed my front discs are quite lipped with about 3mm of pad... think I'll be looking at something soon - BBKs are too expensive for me, but wouldn't mind some Tarox discs and pads; time to hammer Google search

No idea mate - I'd love some drilled / grooved brakes mainly for the aesthetics, but have heard most of the cheapish materials (other than the top end Porsche type stuff) are simply going to crack; not sure how much of that is true...?
