Are there any other car alternatives that I should consider?
Definitely!
Have a look at the 335i, it will be more fun to drive than the S4; IMO, the latest 3series is more attractive, too, as much as it pains me to admit it...

My brother has friends who have S4s and 335s and he much preferred the BMW.

As much as I dislike BMWs, it is the car I would buy...

Test drive both and decide, but there is no chance I would get an S4 without testing the BM first, too.

Or Sprint Blue!

Come on, anything but these monotone, boring as hell colours!

I think sprint blue would look good but it's not listed on the colour options on the colour configurator, tbh there's not many colours to choose from

There's a Sprint Blue one on Pistonheads. Looks pretty good.

Agree with UZ, drive the S4 and the 335i, one feels far more alive than the other

Had a 335i coup for the last 2 1/2 yrs, great engine and quick even average 30 mpg.

But disappointed with BMW build, customer service & reliability.

Stuff fixed (under warranty)

New 7 speed auto Gearbox (£10,000)
New Multi Media control panel
R/H Xenon washer cover broke off 3 times
L/H  Xenon washer cover broke off 1 time
Drivers door handle and lock worked loose about to fall off

Not covered under warranty

Rear 19" M Sport Double Spoke wheel 'Split'
New Wheel & Tyre = £1000.

As a £45k car and my 4th BMW from the same dealership you would have thought replacing the broken wheel for free would be a no brainer!!  going to Audi in 6 months  :happy2:

Rant Over

So, who wants to buy my GTi. Single owner from new, with loads of mods - as it stands?

A friend has a 330d saloon with 18's and over 5 years got through 3 rear wheels - all having cracks in them.

Another friend who lives in London (so not loads of use) had a 335i convertible with 19's from new, in 2 years he had 2 or 3 on the rear too, again these split - one caused a blow out or so it was thought.

Not cheap to replace and like you BMW didn't want to know.

Do you think getting one in white will adversely affect resale value in the long term?

Not as much as 6 or 7 years ago; white is a popular colour nowadays.

It won't hold up as well as black or grey, but I don't believe it will be too bad; the A4/3-series are both fairly popular in white these days.

The biggest problem with those BMW's is not the wheels its the run flats, they are the cause of the rims splitting.

Quite a few people get rid of them and are glad because ride and handling is improved.

I agree though BMW's stance appears to have been poor on warranty for damaged wheels. Although I read some guy took them to small claims and won so BMW had to replace the damaged wheel(s) :happy2:.
