yeah man that looks cool,,, how long did you have to leave your car on a jack for, was thinking about that and was a bit worried about leaving the car outside for many hours up on a jack, cant get my car into my garage as my driveway slopes down and garage is flat so i would scrape the front floor of the car,,, stupid house builders.
i only have the stupid supplied jack that comes with the gti so i think i will buy a trolley jack

i got one of these,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-New-Arcan-3-0-Ton-Low-Lift-Trolley-Jack-Professional-/300790660514?pt=UK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item4608853da2

fit under a slammed car too. well worth the money

if you dont get that one, just make sure you get one with a rubber pad. if you use the pinch welds to jack up the car it will prolong their life, unless you get a AUDI TT jacking kit like i did.

in fact I'm gonna invest in another one of those.

also, i got this caliper painting kit from awesome GTI.
http://www.awesomegti.com/folia-tec-caliper-colour-kit

decent price, i did my R32 brakes with 2 coats, front and backs and still have enough for a third coat.    used an artists brush with soft bristles, made painting much easier.

cheers for that dude, i will prob buy the one you found, as for the caliper kit - my calipers actually look almost brand new so i will just clean them when i take the wheels of to paint the hubs,,,,, is the best way to clean the calipers whilst still on the car with brake cleaner spray do you think as mine just look like they need a wipe down but is it ok to completelly spray them with the cleaning spray first, thanks for the link

I just used the supplied jack and left each hub for a bit less than 1 and a half hours before putting the wheel back on.

Wasn't worth buying a jack just for this job. Supplied jack was fine, was made to perform a function and it does it. Having said that, I obviously wouldnt work underneath it!

dont get me wrong i agree with you the supplied jack is there to serve a function and it does it ( just ) im only saying that if you need to get a wheel of in future for any reason, painting hubs, cleaning backs of wheels, changing tyre, cleaning behind interier trims etc etc etc then it is usefull,,, also the crank bar is very poor you get in any car and dont fancy being at the road side at 1 in the morning or something in pouring rain and freezing cold trying to get a partially seized wheel of with a one arm crow bar thats all im saying.
a trolley jack in the garage and a crank torque wrench in the boot would obviouslly be safer and a lot easier
s**t just reminded myself to buy a torque wrench lol  :surprised:

when i painted the GTI calipers on the car, i used a steam cleaner on mine, a screwdriver to get rid of flaking paint and also a wire brush to smooth the caliper out.

im not sure if the brake cleaner will do any damage to anything around the brakes, or copper grease that sits where the brake pads are. best to ask your vw dealer or mechanic.

i think i heard somewheree that you shouldnt spray it onto the disks as it will act as a lubricant and not stop when you want to. again - best to check at a garage.

the second time i was painting R32 Calipers before they were fitted so i did use the cleaner on them.   hope that helps!

thanks for that, yeah i know about not putting the brake cleaner on the disks as i done it 3 weeks ago on the wifes car and took a day to wear off,,,, lost about 40% efficiency on the brakes - oops
i think my calipers just need a clean,,, my sons wet bum wipes are a multi task thing lol,,, thanks for your help
