smoked chrome monzas [ NOW DONE!]
« on: October 15, 2012, 07:56:10 pm »
I have finally found a decent local place to get my Monza 2's refurbed. I am getting them painted rather than diamond cut again. I have seen pics of smoked chrome on here and that is what I would like. The wheel place say they can do smoked chrome for me and have even made up a sample. I like it, but they did say that because it is a unique effect and some mixing quantities are done by hand that each wheel will look slightly different. It shouldn't be major, but they just can't get an exact match as the smoke darknes may vary slightly on each wheel.
I just wanted to know what other people who have had this colour done think about it. Are you happy with the effect? Would be especially interested to know what you think if you have a metallic black car like mine.

Hi guys

There may be some helpful info and pics in this thread:  http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,726.0.html

I had my genuine Monza 18's powdercoated Smoked Chrome but there isn't any obvious differences in appearance between each wheel.

I think I've mentioned this before?…... I've also toyed with the idea of painting my Monza's.

I'd go for the Brightest Lightest Silver available (almost white)  :happy2:

Im only saying this because sometimes in certain light my Monza's would almost look like a painted finish

I think mine has some pictures around somewhere. I did it and liked it. All the wheels looked the same to me.

I had a similar effect on the alloys I had on my Z4M. The colour differences were only really noticeable when I had neglected to wash the car.. so mostly in the winter.

Otherwise, looks wicked.

I only ran on mine for a year because I bought the OZ Alleggerita lightweights (Monza 11Kg, LeggyRita 8Kg), but my Smoked Chrome looks different in different lights:

I was going to sell them but I like them so much although they haven't been out of their boxes for several years now. I think I will display one on my bedroom wall so at least I can still enjoy them.

I was going to do the same with a different alloy  :ashamed:

Thanks guys. I'm 99.9% decided on the smoked chrome finish. Just gonna pop in to the refurbers tommorow and look at the sample wheel they made up for me and check I'm sure I like it.
I think the difference in each wheel will be barely noticeable to me. The guy doing the refurb just explained that because he is a perfectionist, whatever he does for me he will be able to spot a slight difference in them.

If you need convincing the other 0.01%, here's my experience: http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,42652.msg497139.html#msg497139

Mine were done by hand, too and there's no visible difference.  Do it!  (And then post some pics so us saddos enthusiasts can admire!)

Thanks SRC and Chowgar, those wheels are looking nice! Convinced now anyway. I went to see the smoked chrome test wheel they made up for me today. It was slightly darker than the wheels on here, but they have said they can lighten it up a little for my wheels. Anyway, I was happy with what I saw and I'm booked in for Tuesday. They are even going to get it all done in a day! I can't wait!
Pics of course as soon as I get the chance.
