I've got a 55 plate with no arm rest, i take it the newer shape with bottle opener drinks holder was a facelift ? is it possible to fit the later to the older ?

Console is the same, look for a 'Euro cup holder mod' for the sliding cover type, the armrest is seperate to the centre console and I have retrofitted both (as many have).

Certainly can.
Cos it's a pain of a task I'd suggest getting all the cup holder bits, armrest (should you want the plumbing for armrest rear vents to work - worthwhile doing in my opinion to finish it off) & do it all at once.
