The Future and the MK6 Golf GTI Site.....
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:40:46 pm »
The MK5 GTI site is IMHO the best Forum out there for MK5 GTIs - well done to the Team that own/runs it. :congrats:

Unfortunately, the MK5 GTI Forum sister site the "MK6 GTI Forum" is basically dead on its feet, despite a number of MK5 GTI members switching to MK6s, including me.

I realise both forums have their own url, but given that so many of the section areas are common to both, could they not somehow be amalgamated (dare I say it, similar to the other golf gti forum)?  A MK7 GTI Section could also be added, then a MK8 etc..

I really think a bit of a redesign is urgently needed to bring all the marks together into one site, to ensure that the Forum is future proofed and thereby prospers, especially given that the MK7 is also now virtually upon us.

Does anyone agree?

It would be nice Trev, but we know through experience it creates a, them and us atmosphere. Some of the guys with the older mark, will post on the new marks threads saying it is just a 5.5 or 6.5 or a 7.5. And the guys with the new cars will say your just jealous and it will deteriorate from there.  :rolleye:

It would be nice but in the end just painful.  :happy2:

What news is there about what's happening to this site's future, please?

Over 6,000 members now and the site bogs down more and more often. Didn't one or two qualified folks (for example alexperkins) volunteer to sort out the site's server problems etc?

I dont know what the future hold for the forum but I have to say owning a Mk5 would be a less joyous affair without this site , its great! Im on the other GTI forums but they are not the same and I never post on them.

I think it's important for everyone to understand that this site isn't about to close down - It just needs a change of IT Admin as SteveP has far less time now. Oh, and the servers need sorting out better to accommodate the traffic. [Perhaps if I stopped posting, the site wouldn't keep bogging down ]

Of course, it's not me who decides the future of this site but it is my understanding that the Admin Team have no plans to shut it down.

It's SteveP who has opened this subject and appears to be inviting his replacement on that side of running the site.

Back to my original post.  More MK6s are being added to the MK5 site - "Members' Rides" etc. whilst the separate MK6 site continues to die.  I still think that all the MKs (5, 6, 7 etc) should be put within one site, as sections, to future proof the site, before it's too late.

I agree the mk6 site is dead but having separate sections on the MK5 site has been discussed before. The general opinion is that by putting in sections will cause segregation and the usual trolling of what mk is the better car etc, so it's to be left as it is was the the outcome of the last thread

The only section that really differentiates between specific models is the MK5 General area, and that is only in name only. In reality the discussion there isn't tied only to MK5 Golfs.

The bigger issue perhaps is the site name and URL, but the argument for keeping that is that it is established and well known.

Personally i think it fine as it is.

People can obsess on forums if different MK's are segregated and some would only enter the section that pertains to their own MK. This would IMHO be a loss to information and banter as I like the mix that you get on here. Ok it is a little bit of a mash up, but I like it like that. :happy2:

I agree with Hurdy - The mash up is good and makes us all more equal. We are all equal except that some of us are more equal than others!

However, surely it would be easy to revise some of the names of the sections - Something like "GTI Platform" rather than "Mk5 Golf GTI"? < Not for the site name but for the first forum section title. It would be more accurate to what actually is and also be more future proof.

Coming from the Scooby world.. I stopped using Scoobynet, as a serious place to ask questions along time ago.

With the Classics, Bug, Blob, Hawkeye, Hatch, Newage Saloon, Special Editions and throw in the huge change in Spec between the UK Supplied and JDM Import, it became a play ground of trolls, asshats and insults about who's Subaru was the best design.

If you asked a question you would get a sh*tty reply like you should already know the answer or the "Use the Search Button" troll post.

This is one of the finest and most useful forums I have ever used!'

This!  :happy2:

I love the fact that this forum has Mk5's, 6's, all variants of VW, Seat's, Audi's, Skoda's and even BMW's and probably some I've not mentioned. The forum reflects life and its diversity and long may that continue. The melting pot of information on this site is immense and a benefit to all. If those peeps are segregated then that community would be lost IMHO.

I have said it before! and shall say it again!.
This forum came about because the various Golf marks on another forum were always sniping and generally being disrespectful all of the time. This is the reason we started a separate sister forum for future marks, but we never really put the effort in to get it going as we found most people came and posted on here but without the ' my car is better than your car' crap.
It seems with a bit of effort at the start, this forum accepts just about any car and person.
I also think that Robin might be correct in updating the section names, but i think that having it predominantly for Mk5,s and named as such keeps the majority happy and gives them ownership. A bit like having a boss that everyone respects and wont cross, but is never actually their.  :happy2:

My mk5 bought me to this forum, but its much, much more than just about cars for me hence why I post more in random chat than anywhere else.

Long may it continue  :drinking:  and it would be a pretty dull old world if we all had the same cars.
Candy White 5 door mk6 gti  and a escort cosworth for wasting money on!!
