« on: October 20, 2012, 06:28:19 pm »
Hay all!

Really excited about picking up my new 08 Golf GTI tomorrow and signing the log book, cant wait for the 120mile trip home to really test her out.  :driver:

........but I have 1 query I'm trading in my Astra with the garage which currently has my private plate on, the garage has processed the plate transfer to transfer it on yo the GTI but the astra is taxed until 31st may, I'm not sure how it works but is there anyway I can claim the tax back?

Thanks every1.

Don't you just fill in a form and send the disc back ?

Just take the disc out before you leave it with the dealer and get the necessary form from the post office to claim the remaining months of tax back. :happy2:

Have you agreed with the dealer that you will get the refund for the tax disc?

With transferring the private plate you will have to get a new tax disc for the Astra with the original registration, if the dealer is sorting out the transfer then they will get both the new tax discs when they get the paperwork back from DVLA.

If they have agreed to let you apply for a refund on the Astras tax make sure they give you something in writing incase they "forget" to send you the tax disc for the Astra

Nothing was said about the tax on the astra but he has sorted the tax out for the Golf which I will be paying the whole 12months tomorrow when I sign the log book and collect the car. If I've got to pay for the tax on the Golf I'm not letting him have the tax in the Astra.

As far a I know because he has started to transfer the plates over the car is still in my name so the new tax disk with the original registration number on will be sent to my house then i will be forwarding the log book on to him with out the tax disk then I will reclaim the tax back.

Does this sound about right?

If the form has been posted into DVLA then you should receive both tax discs but if they go into a DVLA office they will get both tax discs

Oh right, well he would of gone straight to the DVLA Office because he is local to 1 but think we'll have to come to some sort of agreement.

I'll see if he will take the remaining 7 months tax which is £113 still on the Astras off the price of the £250 for 12months tax for the Golf

This car buying stuff is giving me a headache but I'm sure it will all be worth it when I pick her up later!

Not long to go now mate. :happy2:. As above i would take the tax disc from you'r Astra & just fill in the form which you can print off the dvla web site or collect from the post office.
ED35. Standard factory condition.

He can't as the current tax disc that is on the Astra will not be valid when the private plate is transferred to the golf,
When DVLA issue the new tax discs they wil ask for the current ones to be destroyed.

It might even be classed as fraud if he sends back a tax disc for refund that the DVLA has cancelled and asked to be destroyed

.........cant he just explain about the change over?. If they cancel the Astra one where is the money going when it's destroyed & still valid?.

The Astras tax disc will be replaced with another one with its original registration number on it, if he is collecting the car today and the dealer goes to the DVLA tomorrow to transfer the plates the Dealer will receive both tax discs for the golf and the Astra, it's totally up to the dealer if they forward both tax discs or just the new one for the golf and claim the refund for the Astras tax. That's why it's a good idea to get the agreement in writing.

I've just gone through this. You will only be able to claim the tax back for the Astra using a tax disc that has the original reg on it. Also from what I've got from the dvla the dealer cannot claim the tax it's only the prev owner.

Best option here is to get the dealer to reduce the amount you pay for the Golf tax disc by the remaining value on the astra disc, simples :happy2: (As long as they go for it, it would be much less hassle)
Diamond Black 2007 (56) Golf GTI 3Dr DSG ¦ 18" Monza II's ¦ Cruise control ¦ MFSW ¦ Highline ¦ Rear parking sensors ¦ PDT Stage 1 ¦ Forge Twintake ¦ H&R Sport Springs ¦ NQSBBK ¦ R32 Rear bumper ¦ BCS Powervalve Sports R32 style TBE ¦ Valeo LED Rear Lights ¦ Xenon lights with HID kit ¦ DNX521DAB ¦ 12mm Spacers all round ¦
