Poster at petrol station

I found this quite interesting, at a BP near me the till had this little poster which showed the tax on £30 worth of fuel. 60% to 40% iirc. Then it went on to say motorists need to be aware of how much tax they are paying. I think it's about time they did this. Anything like this at a petrol station near you?

in one word, pointless

The government can charge what they like, you don't have a choice.

If the tax was less the petrol station retailers would bump the price up

In the October issue of Top Gear magazine they had some figures (not sure what they based them on).

In 2003 the duty was 75.6% of the cost of petrol and in 2011 it was 58.6%. Basically the petrol companies are making much more profit now a days.

All set out here chaps in the AA's monthly fuel reports

http://www.theaa.com/resources/Documents/pdf/motoring-advice/fuel-reports/october2012.pdf

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuel/

Ok so the amount of duty in percentage terms may have reduced but the tax take has increased.

at current price of £6.662 per gallon and tax of 56.2% thats still £3.75 in tax for every gallon of fuel.
