This is the way i am going to try, In fact ordered my 10mm drill bit and hot glue gun this morning, had the inner light units and bulb sitting round in my garage for far to long.

How about taking the feed from the number plate light and fitting some non-canbus leds(low resistance) in the number plate bulb holder i.e. the extra bulbs in the rear light would create the needed resistance for the cold lamp diagnosis?

I don't think this will work, because you need 2 bulbs in each unit.

Even if you use error free bulbs all round, the resistances will not match what the ECU expects to see.

Bought some very cheap light clusters to do this hopefully later in the week.

Who's using/used what bulbs? Ideally I want this integrated into factory wiring without having to turn off bulb out warnings. May get some 1W SMD shallow bulbs to start with.

im gonna try this, my plan is to use LED (non canbus) bulbs in the number plate lamps and then the same in the inner clusters, fag packet maths put the draw of standard the same as LED no plate bulbs and inners, so my thinking is the ECU wont batter an eye lid at the draw.............Tavy fire station on fast dial :popcornsoda:

just looked into it a little, now the standard number plate festoon bulbs are 10watt, so here is my plan LED festoon bulbs are 3 watts each and the 501 bulbs are 4 watt each, so off each number plate feed the standard is 10, so change that for the the LED bulb for the plate and then 2 501's in each cluster give a score of 11 watts each side, im fairly sure that will be fine with the bulb warning system and will be trying this one evening this week, think to start off i will make up some short looms with the 501's and connect them to the number plate feeds and see if the warning comes on, before i strip the boot lid and drill the lens, heres to crossing my fingers

Sounds good.

I have a number plate camera with some SMD's in, not sure of the power they draw but will have the rear bumper off soon so will get a reading. If you get onto this soon I'd be interested in your results.

I'm thinking of taking a constant 12v feed into a relay, making a link from the sidelight wiring to trigger when they come on. That way it's a seperate circuit and it should allow for full light output.

I've read the sidelights only produce 2.4v so tapping into it as a feed makes light output very dim?

Still not sure why VW didn't put bulbs in these in the first instance

I have been thinking about the lights being dim but i think because the LED bulbs in the plate will draw less the effect wont be so big on the 501s in the inners, i will defo be playing with this tomorrow/tuesday evening, will post up some pics of how it goes mate   :happy2:

Well my cheap clusters are on their way, now thinking of butchering it to add a second reverse light, anyone done this?

Got both of my spare light modified now with 2 5w bulbs in place, Took my time and made sure i got the bulbs level, also whilst i was at it installed a clear lense in the fog light to make it look more symmetrical.

Just need to get the wiring sorted now.

I'm halfway through doing the soldering, got some single SMD bulbs, may swap for filaments. Should be trial and error.

Post back your results, I'll not be done today.

I found that Led's were a to direct light and didnt light up the ring fully so would look odd next to the the outer tail lamps.
