Driving Miss Daisy ........up the wall !
« on: June 18, 2009, 02:03:55 pm »
Well, the ED30 can be very economical. I've managed to avarage 39mpg two tanks running using the 'fill to the brim' method.

BUT,...... I can't go on like this, as it's driving me MAD

It's unsafe to be driving for all out economy on our motorways. For 80% of motorway traffic 70mph is a mimimum speed, so trying to maintain 66mph (about 2500 rpm) calls for excellent anticipation and considertion for other road users - not to mention relatively slow progress. It's not something I enjoy and it's not a drving style I can adjust to. I realise some people find cruising at that kind of speed relaxing, but I feel much less in control and much more at the mercy of other road users.

I'm getting frustrated because if I drive the car how I want to (ie how it should be driven) every business trip is costing me money that I can't justify with the wife now not working for another year.

Luckily we managed to sell the wife's audi cab for a reasonable price, so we can get the Touran that we'll need, but the Ed30 will still definitely need to make way for something more economical at sensible motorway speeds of 80mph+ (diesel). Gutted that the car will definitely be going, but such is life ........maybe I'll find my way into a fast golf Tdi

Talking of scary mpg. I had a visit to Watford last Saturday and probably because the majority of my journey was limited by Specs cameras I averaged 38mpg.

If you're after fuel economy, the GTI is not the way to go.

I have managed 40mpg with some bursts of acceleration by sitting at 60mph but it was decidedly unfun. Strangely, I was content at 60mph when the motorway was empty but as soon as other cars appear, I have to show off!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

if it helps my A3 TDi struggles to make 40mpg, infact its sitting around 35-38 in daily use although thats without giving a dam about driving style.

There is such a thing as a fast diesel - the mk4 TDI Anniversary , smart looking car and even driving round town without trying to drive economical you get 40-45mpg, get onto a mway and its 50+

Was remapped too so didnt hang about.

We loose my wife's wage from this month being on maternity - better to be safe than sorry, I can always get another car once she's back at work.
