gt tdi 140 starting issues
« on: July 25, 2012, 09:20:14 pm »
Hi all, I recently bought a gt tdi 140 off my sister and I must say, I love it. But we are having one issue. 1st thing in the morning it starts fine but then after that it seems to crank over for a while before it will fire and the battery starts to sound lazy and die. Now I know what you are thinking, dodgy battery! But I've but the tester on it at work a few times now and always shows as good. A lad next door is having the same trouble with his a3 140 tdi. He's been told about problems with starters, but i'd like to find the problem before chucking parts at it!

Any ideas?

maybe heater plugs? but would of thought it wouldn't start in the mornings then?!

Many thanks

Ben.

It really is strange, i'd swear the battery is on it's way out but shows as good.

I did think maybe starter is seizing?

Took my car to jkm for a revo re-map today and they plug in before and after and it seems whoever did my cambelt hasnt timed the cam up properly its-7 degrees out which can cause bad starting when warm

My camshaft position sensor was broken on mine which was making it hard to start once warm

If it turns over slow when warm & the batterys good it will be the starter, if it cranks  fast but doesn't catch could be other things, we fit lots of Crank sensors & pick up rings for the fast crank but no catch fault when warm on the
1.9 & 2.0 PPD's

Common problem on the 140s diesels
I've changed a lot of starter motors on these due bad starting when warm

After a few miles get on these engines the starters get tierd with use
They don't spin the engine over fast enough to start when warm/hot

I'm having this problem too, for 18 months now infact but only recently has it started to fail to start at all and i have to bump it.  Happens when it's very cold or if I have been driving for a while (not every time though).  The car has recently been serviced and I had a new starter motor fitted, as well as new glow plugs.

Has anyone got anywhere with this?   Might try the battery but as I have just spend nearly £2500 replacing Turbo, intercooler etc I really can't afford to start another guessing game.

On octavia 140 pd I've replaced dual mass flywheels for this and also crank shaft sensors.
Most success with the crank sensors though.

I have also noticed that when trying to start when i have this is, that the doors automatically lock and not openable via central locking button and i can hear a relay clicking, does this narrow it down for anyone?

Is the crank sensor a cheap and easy part to replace?
