Number plate LEDS (again)
« on: October 30, 2012, 08:26:51 pm »
The ebay links in the previous posts I had a look at don't work any more (outdated). I know festoon ones are popular and I had them for a year but I've had one fail already.

Am looking at these:
clicky

18 SMDs in a complete unit. Has anyone bought these at all?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

i fitted the 18 led units to my car, They are very bright,
I took these pics when it was still dusk so not getting the full effect from the pics, But gives you the idea.

one side done and one side standard.

I have these no issues at all !

Previously had ones from the rocco these gave errors and often needed to restart the engine or turn lights off and on again to get them restarting.

From your pics, Cap, I gather they're just push-fit?

That's right,
Just unscrew the old ones and disconnect the cable, reattach the cable to the new unit and pop back in.
The little silver boxes that you see in the pic are the resistors, I didn't use them and have no problems whatsoever

Well mine arrived today and I just fitted them. Fairly simple but the connections don't "click" firmly into place. They also don't fit perfectly into the socket - I think a rubber shroud would have helped.

Otherwise in terms of illumination, far brighter than the festoon ones.

If you were to get the cheap ones off ebay do they tend to blow quite easily then?

The eBay ones I've used the past year or so from seller fizzmo have lasted about 4 months a time before the flickering started. Great quick delivery and look good but getting a bit bored of replacing them 3 times a year! Be interested to see how these 18 LEDs hold up. Do they look like floodlights at night though? I see an s3 locally and it's like he has 2 maglites on his plate from afar!

Ah yeah I have had the cheap ones off ebay for a couple weeks now. Hopefully they last as long as possible, if they do go quickly I will be buying more expensive ones!

Right, to update,

The 18 smd ones above have failed after 8 months of use. That's worse than the festoon type which used the car's OEM holders and just swapped SMDs for bulbs. The 18-SMD ones didn't seem to fit snugly and show signs of corrosion within the unit but the unit and the connections are fine.

Any different ones to recommend?

same happened to me. but to be fair ive just bought the same from a different place. i prefer the 18 SMD ones to festoon bulbs.
