mk5 air vents not good
« on: October 31, 2012, 11:59:40 pm »
air vents on the mk5 ?
is it just me or is the air vents on the middle console pants even on full blast,,, even had to move my air freshener to the outside vent so I could get some air blowing through it ?
the large vent on the dash above the stereo is great but that's it,,, thought maybe by turning that vent of would redirect more force to the middle ones but not really.
also I keep getting condensation on the windows in the rear when it has been wet outside, they just don't 100% clear,,, the mk4 didn't do this, I spoke to a friend at vw and he says it is a known problem as well as his car which is a mk6 ??
anyone else notice these isues ?

have you checked your pollen filter recently? its under the dash on passenger footwell. if thats manky it can cause condensation issues. i dont think the fans are that great. also, you have to have the air con ON ie not in ECON mode as there is actually a demister or dehumidifier type thing in there that clears the screen especially in rain. ive tested it with ECON mode in the rain and the car mists up, press AUTO again and it clears. the same thing happened in my audi. its to do with the climate control.

also , worth checking first before you remove the pollen filter is is it sealed properly, they have a tendancy to slide over, breaking the seal so that the fans seem crappy. try moving side to open and then close and try again.

thanks for that, very usefull, I changed the pollen filter as soon as I got the car and I checked it was sealed properly but I haven't been using the air con so I will give that a try  :happy2:

Yep, air conditioning by it's nature dries out (dehumidifies) the air, hence why it's a good idea to run it to demist the screen. My aircon button on my climate is on all year round, I just adjust the temperature to suit and have no issues at all with windows misting up.

interesting, in my mk4 I had before I never had a problem with the air con off as I know it burns fuel, the 2 kids go in their child seats and of course condensation goes onto the windows when it has been raining but cleared very quickly but in the mk5 it doesn't clear at all sometimes on their windows, will try the air con as you say, seems strange how the mk4 didn't need it but the mk5 does

Those middle vents are pretty week when you're on the AUTO setting. Closing the big dash top vent will improve them though. However you can get them working really well by pushing the button which directs air at face level. This is the one with the straight arrow in the group of buttons with recirculate and air flow towards feet etc. When you are on this setting though the fan speed won't adjust automatically with the temperature because AUTO is then off.

what does auto actually do then, how does it know what air current is needed

Auto uses sensors in the system to decide where best to put the air for best effect, along with adjusting the thermostat and fan speed to maintain the correct temperature in the cabin. So basically, put it on auto with aircon on and select your temperature, the system does the rest.

Use the Aircon through the winter months for dehumidifying the damp air and vitally maintaining the Aircon compressor.  I believe its internals are partially lubricated by the movement of the refrigerant and the seals and O rings can fail if the compressor is not run regularly.  Many folk seem to think aircon is for summer cooling only; winter aircon use is vital for clear windows and maintaining the incredibly expensive compressor ready for the warmer months!

Just moving away from topic Scott, did you manage to get those DRLs fitted yet? If so, what's the verdict?
