Well, I stripped all the side of the engine down and replaced the chain, refitted the balance chart and put a new Cambelt on it...
Started up straight away.. But sounds a bit tappy... I haven't had the car running since June, I can't remember if the engine tapped this loudly before?

I'm pretty chuffed I did it all for myself.. The ticking is coming from around the fuel pump but there is a bit of a thud on the engine too...

It's only an iPhone vid.. Do you think it sounds ok? It doesn't seem particularly smokey, bearing in mind the maf is disconnected and the intake pipe work

When I had my eddy30, it sounded exactly like this. Even after Cambelt/WP change it still sounded tappy but softer. I think it's pretty much standard.

When I first got my GTI I had VW look at the engine due to the tapping noise, they said it was normal.

A month or two later the oil pump gave way and tock the engine out. My new engine does not make the same amount of noise as the old one !
