Winter Tyres

Seems to be a lot of info about the benefits of fitting these so are they worth it ? Anybody on here got any recommendations?

Winter tyres are worth the money.especially in the snow.Any snow tyres are better than summer ones.the most popular are nankang s v 2.the hankook-the Avon ice tourer.The conti and the bridgestone ones are not popular as they can be expensive

Definately worth it.  They are not just for snow, they are designed for when the temperature drops below 7c and the rubber on your summer tyres stop working properly.

I'm running Hankook Icebear W300 on 17" Monzas on my GTi.

The answer you get generally depends what part of the country the person replying lives in.

As for me, I live in NE England and 300m above sea level, so if it's gonna snow, I'll get it.
Not only that but my narrow street with tall buildings gets little or no light in winter, so any hard packed snow or ice can lie for a long time. It's worth it for me having the control and confidence that M&S tyres bring, as I am also in a very hilly area.

This year I have bought Nankang SV2 (not come yet) purely on price and the fact that some people like Andrew have tried and tested them on the Golf. I won't be taking my car out in heavy snow as too low and barely gets on the drive as it is, but there for when temps are way down and there's a bit slush left over. £350 for some 17s with new tyres that'll do me four years is great value I think.

On my last car before I put on GTI brakes, I had some Continental and Dunlop 15s, they were tremendous tyres, still usable above 7C, but in 17/18" sizes they are extortianate. Still make use of them on the wife's SEAT.

Same with me 300m above sea level in the north east as I  travel to the coast and back for work everyday having to cross county borders that get forgotton about by councils because they are on the edges of there county, its worth it.  Just got some Nankangs for the SEAT im going to use over the winter too. Previously used Vredestein.

Well worth the investment, now on my 3rd winter using them.
Nokian WR G2’s are very good, the Nokian WR A3’s are even better (much better than Bridgestone Blizzaks)

+1 I've got the Nokian WR G2's on the GTi & Audi - ran them for the last 2.5 winters, they are very good and suited to are cold, wet winters with occasional snow and slush. Great investment for me

Thinking of buying these tyres to put on some 17 Monzas I have.
Will I be able to use the nuts from my 18's when I swap over or will I need to buy some.

Likewise - I live in Aberdeenshire so we get pretty low temperatures, snow etc. Also my house is in a small culdesac on a hill, so when it snows/freezes over its a nightmare to get out! However I've also been a bit dubious about winters, however having now had my golf since April I'm going to take the plunge - and in fact I'm getting winters fitted tonight on all four corners. I needed 2 new tyres anyway and I'm a bit obsessive about everything being the same!

I opted for Veredstein Wintract Extremes - seem to be fairly decent going by the majority of reviews. I'm keen to see if they do live up to they 'hype'.

I live in quite a rural part of Cumbria and although we've had some pretty harsh winters here over the last few years I still cant talk myself into spending 100's on some winter tyres, simply cant afford to spend a load of money on something that might only be needed for a few days over the next few months. I totally understand that they would be very effective in snow but I'm very sceptical as to how much they'd help on proper black ice.

Feel welcome to laugh histerically at me when I post pics of my car stuffed into a hedge later on this winter.......

Driving on fresh snow is a piece of cake as there is lots of traction available, it when it gets compressed it goes slippery (like ice) this is the reason I run them, the video above should prove to you how good they are on ice.
