Mfd, RCd or rns?? Parrot or fiscon.??
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:24:25 pm »
Hi all

What would be my best option for music/ Bluetooth/phone on a 57 plate gti.

What I would like is to play the music from my iPhone (wirelessly) and make hands free calls all via the the cars steering wheel controls,
I thought about fiscon or parrot for the phone, but will a rns 510 do phone /music functions,, if so which one is the best?

Thanks,,,,,

So,, does the rns 510 have built in Bluetooth for phone and an internal hard drive,, ??

If it had an internal hard drive It would be easier than trying to stream from my phone.

Rns-510 has a 30gb-ish hdd. If you want bluetooth its an extra module. Only just noticed i can change tracks via my mfsw when playing through bluetooth!

RNS simple to fit, Bluetooth can be a pain as you need to remove the drivers A pillar and some other panels to route the mic to the OEM location. Both units will require coding.

Where are you based? A few of us on here can do retrofits.

I was faced with this dilema recently, so priced up the following:

RNS510: £500
Bluetooth module: £150
iPod input: £110

Total: £760

At that point i spent £85 on a Parrot Mki9200 on ebay (my 3rd now as it happens) and upgraded the maps on my MFD2 for £15. The Parrot allows me to stream music from my iphone via bluetooth, pulls music off an SD card in the glovebox, and i have full control of my ipod (also in the glovebox), with the iPod display being replicated on the Parrots display. Obviously, the call quality is also very good, as can be expected from a Parrot product, in addition, the internal amp on the Parrot is just as good sound quality wise as the standard VW kit.

I went for a rcd510 with dab and a Bluetooth module.
Same as RNS but without nav, DVD and hard drive but I filled a 32gb sd card with mp3s and it has a built in 6cd changer

You might also have to change the can gateway if your car is older than 2008
Eddie-NL on here can provide you with a gateway and precode it for your car, he also does the Bluetooth kits(genuine vw)

My Bluetooth works with an iPhone 5 and worked with my iPhone 4

What I paid

Rcd510 £210 (eBay)
Can gateway £75 (Eddie)
Bluetooth kit £140 (Eddie)
Sd card £20 (eBay)
Dab ariel £20 (eBay)

Really do find my iPod connection (in the armrest) a PITA so never use it.

As BAZ300 posted regarding info and prices!!  :happy2:  :drinking: :happy2:

I also have an RCD510 DAB with 32GB SDHC card with several hundred albums on it, does take about 45secs to boot, and a separate Bluetooth fitted (by Eddie-NL).

All controllable via your touchscreen unit or via MFSW with display on the highline.

RNS510 a much better unit that has a hard drive to store music on and obviously comes with the benefit of DVD and SAT NAV and the ability to have a Rear View Camera fitted.

Have a look at the dension five, have it in my 07 with a rcd500 stereo, picked mine up on eBay for 90, buy nows are 190 ish but seen the odd one come up for what I paid. Very happy with its Bluetooth functions controlled through mfsw and highline cluster. Have used with a USB stick and phone Bluetooth for music but is should  work with IPhones. Easy fit, had to reset twice since install about two months so not perfect but I'm happy with it for the cost.

Comes with everything bar the SOT-976 lead which costs <£10 off ebay. iPod and SD cards are hidden in the glovebox.

All controlled by this wireless controller, which ive now refitted in the ashtray, so totally hidden when not in use:

just had fitted 2 days ago everything you need
rns 510 h led
k05 phone kit ( voice activated as well )
aerial upgrade / sharkfin
5 metre cabling
gps antenna
mk6 rear view camera integrated into the 510 unit

great system and fitted by golfman

I have zero units in sight in the car, zero cables, full functionality, mic built into oem fitting above your head, instant Bluetooth as soon as I step into the car, just code your phone once installed and that's it, also have full phonebook on the 510 screen, and the mk6 camera is the best on the market.

this is the best possible set up but does come at a cost although most of that is the 510 unit itself, also when I am on the phone I don't have to raise my voice in order to be heard, audio unit will self mute as soon as call is made and as I said it is voice activated at the press of one button

golfman also does a great fitting service
